Anyone who watches DStv cannot help but be aware that it is M-Net’s 25th birthday. But travellers arriving at O.R Tambo airport earlier this month had their attention drawn to the fact in an unusual way: a flash mob brought visitors to a standstill as they erupted into an amazing dance routine that held the unwitting audience spellbound.
On investigation, TheMediaOnline discovered that the dancers were from the Monnyth Art School. M-Net’s Lester Din says, “Quite a few community-based dance schools around Gauteng also came on board to assist with dancers as we needed a large group to fill the space at OR Tambo”.
Mooky King from the Monnyth Art School choreographed the dance after the idea was mooted by M-Net and DarkChild productions, an activations company. “It is an extension of our Magic Moments campaign that’s been running since Grahamstown Arts Festival,” says Din.
Just over 250 dancers took part, dancing to the sounds of Lloyd Cele’s My Air. Din says although the bystanders were taken completely by surprise “the reaction was positive, many recorded the flashmob on their mobile phones or stopped to see what was happening. We couldn’t have hoped for a better reception.”
