The MediaShop’s Media ShopTalk takes a look at the latest RAMS figures, from September to December 2011, and confirms that the radio universe is looking pretty stable right now.
The final 2011 RAMS figures have come in the latest February 2012 release. This RAMS wave covers September 2011 – December 2011. Again, it is interesting to see just how stable radio listenership overall continues to be. Sure there are a couple of stations that have gained listeners and those that have lost, but remember that statistically anything below 5% cannot be taken into account.
In the December newsletter, which covered the previous RAMS figures, we ended off by saying: “Bear in mind that people’s radio listening habits are very similar to TV viewership habits – people listen to programmes and presenters; they don’t always listen to a radio station”.
Two radio stations have just announced two very significant changes to their programmes and DJ line-ups that will once again put this thought to the test.
94.7 Highveld Stereo – Mark Pilgrim and Bailey Schneider will be leaving the afternoon drive time show (4pm – 7pm) at the end of March 2012. Their slot will be taken over by Anele (coming from 5FM). When Jeremy Mansfield left Highveld in 2010, we watched many listeners leave the morning drive slot to other stations, but since then, the audience has settled and a different audience is now available in the morning drive time channel.
5FM – Grant and Anele’s show between 12noon and 3pm will come to an end at the end of March too. Grant will be leaving broadcasting and as stated above, Anele will be joining Highveld. Again, we will watch what happens with the audience. At this stage 5FM have not announced who will be replacing Grant and Anele, but whoever comes in will no doubt either entertain the current listeners or make them look for another station.
We will monitor the changes accordingly and keep you abreast of changes in listenership and profiles accordingly.
