The excitement started mounting in the morning as the social networks were flooded with the #MTNradioawards hashtag. And it got increasingly hyper as it got closer to the time when the radio industry’s biggest award show – now in its third year – was about to launch.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre on Sunday night. A whopping 866 entries were received, double the number of the previous year.
Conceptualised and founded by Future Group’s Jeremy Maggs and Richard Lendrum, the MTN Radio Awards aim to promote excellence in radio – the medium that reaches more people in South Africa than any other.
“The awards banquet is the radio industry’s chance to get together as an extended family and to celebrate success, to highlight achievement and to ultimately honour those within the greater radio family whose great work ensures the longevity of this industry about which we are all so extremely passionate,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards.
Serame Taukobong, chief ‘ayobaness’ officer of MTN says radio has always played “a key role in our media communications mix”.
“We launched the brand on radio, we have grown the brand on radio, and today we still use radio as one of the key influencers in communicating our messages to our customers. Our support for the MTN Radio Awards exemplifies our commitment to radio and underlines our intention to continue to use radio well into the future. We see the MTN Radio Awards as a driver for excellence in radio and as a motivator for stations to make increasingly compelling programmes that ensure listener enjoyment. After all, happy and fulfilled listeners remain loyal to their station.”
A panel of industry experts, who score each entry individually, review the entries. These scores are then centrally collated in order to determine the various winners.
“We received a bumper crop of entries this year and the quality of submissions was of a very high standard,” says Rich Mkhondo, chairman of the MTN Radio Awards.
MTN Radio Awards congratulate the respective category winners:
