Entries for The Independent Cash & Carry Group and Shift Young Community Shaper Awards have opened. “In brief the annual awards, identify, acknowledge, and celebrate youth that are actively involved in developing, building and empowering their communities,” says Sanet Yelland of Streamline Advertising.
Shift, screened live on SABC1 Mondays and Tuesdays, is the media partner for The Independent Cash & Carry Group and Shift Young Community Shaper Awards. Shift will share information about the awards over the next few weeks and film the final event.
“Acknowledging young community shapers and ploughing funds into their projects helps the entire community. The Independent Cash & Carry Group and Shift Young Community Shaper Awards offer the youth an opportunity to showcase their projects. By adopting these projects we together with our sponsors are able to provide training, facilities, guidance, and grow the projects into sustainable community projects that will benefit all,” Yelland says.
Candidates must be between the ages of 16 years and 25 years and must be at school or college (be a student), their school/college must approve their entry. Candidates must motivate their reason for entry in an essay of no more than 300 words and candidates must run a community project that benefits their community.
Surekha Singh, commissioning editor in SABC Education’s public information and social development unit, says “The Independent Cash & Carry Group and Shift Young Community Shaper Awards is a premier youth upliftment project in South Africa. We are proud and excited about this partnership because Shift speaks to young people who take the initiative in the spirit of Ubuntu and help their communities by giving them hope and inspiration. Shift is about shifting the mindsets of the youth to do things for themselves, these awards are really important to recognise young community shapers.”
Entries close on May 14 and final judging takes place on 25 June. Prizes include R60 000.00 cash for first winner’s project, R30 000.00 cash for second winner’s project and other finalists receive R10 000.00 for their project.
