This week’s BIG move: Gallarelli takes the reins at Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town
Luca Gallarelli is the new leader of Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town (O&M CT), the Cape’s biggest marketing services agency. Gallarelli is moving up from the deputy managing director position he has held for 18 months to replace Gavin Levinsohn, who is leaving for Australia after five successful years in charge. “Luca is both superbly qualified and prepared for the position of MD after outstanding work as business director on some of the agency’s biggest clients and four years on the board,” says Ogilvy & Mather SA CEO Abey Mokgwatsane.
O&M CT has been on a roll in recent times, topping the national creative league tables by some distance, winning AdReview Cape Agency of the Year and developing a formidable reputation in digital work. Mokgwatsane believes Gallarelli can build on that impressive record because “he has the complete confidence of everyone in the building and among our key clients”.
Port Elizabeth-born Gallarelli studied computer sciences at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and then attended the AAA School of Advertising before joining, what was then called, Ogilvy & Mather Rightford Searle-Tripp & Makin in 2002. Aside from a two year stint at the Jupiter Drawing Room, he has been at the agency ever since and recently has primarily been responsible for the SAB accounts portfolio. He joined the board in 2009 and was appointed deputy MD in 2012.
Gallarelli said he was “thrilled” with the opportunity to lead an agency, which “feels like a second home to me and where I love the values and the creative energy of the place”.

Who’s won what
Contentum wins Citrusdal Wines
When digital content specialist, Contentum, was approached by Citrusdal Wines in early 2013, the brief was clear: Citrusdal Wines wanted to upgrade their website content in order to a strong association with their international and local audiences and their Fair Trade certification. The brand was stagnating while some other modern wine brands were building strong online communities and engaging through useful and constantly updated content.
Contentum were excited to get involved in the strategy phase, a rare starting point, where the client generously shared their thinking and plans. This brand story had so many legs that we were able to portray the authentic voices in video content, giving credibility to their new positioning statement, ‘Changing Live’.
Citrusdal Wines presented an opportunity for Contentum to explore their writing talents in the very competitive wine industry, especially internationally.
“We have grown attached to the Citrusdal Wines brand and are grateful to the client for giving us the wonderful opportunity to work with them; it has been such a joy!”

Graffiti goes digital
Vehicle branding and transit media specialist Graffiti has expanded its extensive media offering to include a new digital out-of-home division. Formed in partnership with UK-based AM Screen, Europe’s largest digital out-of-home advertising company, Graffiti has secured the sole rights to the digital AM Screen product in South Africa and will form part of a global network of over 5000 digital screens reaching 50 million adults each week.
Graffiti Digital is headed up by one of the original Graffiti founding members, Craig Wight, who returns to Graffiti following a six-year stint in Dubai as managing director of Primedia Unlimited Middle East. The new division’s primary focus is currently garage forecourt advertising where digital plug-and-play screens are situated above the main till points in garage forecourt shops.
“The garage forecourt retail solution in South Africa has expanded significantly in recent years with multiple offerings of fresh produce, speciality coffee, hot food and all the other essential convenience store requirements. As a result, footfall in these environments has increased over fifty percent over the last four years with even more development still in the pipeline. This makes this an extremely exciting environment in which to launch a dynamic digital media network,” says Wright.
