Introductory marketing workshops for musicians, promoters and music venue owners are being hosted in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town by Concerts SA in partnership with the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT). Musicians, managers of music venues or groups, and music promoters across all mediums and genres at any level of experience are invited to participate. The workshop – the first in a planned series – will feature an abbreviated version of ACT’s two-day Building Blocks Marketing in the Arts Master Class and aims to provide participants with marketing, entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.
“Artists need to market themselves, get their names out there, create possibilities for their music to be experienced in different ways, and brush up on the tools that benefit their own careers,” says Nailla Dollie, project manager of Concerts SA.
The three-hour workshops will cover both theory and practical tools of marketing. They will provide participants with a broad overview of marketing in the arts as well as offer practical suggestions on advancing their careers, organisations, music venues or bands.
The workshops will be facilitated by cultural practitioner, music researcher and academic, Brett Pyper. Pyper’s broad-based marketing and entrepreneurial knowledge, coupled with his specialised research and experience in the discipline of music will ensure that participants gain an understanding of the importance of innovative marketing endeavours for the arts. The workshops are free and will take place from 2-4 December 2013, starting in Johannesburg, then in Durban and Cape Town, respectively.
As capacity is limited to 20 participants per workshop, interested parties are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is 21 November 2013.
