STORY UPDATE: Jade Hubner, a finalist in the 2014 Miss South Africa contest, has reported that she sold a whopping 236 copies of The Big Issue in her day-long quest to highlight the work of the job creation project. Her effort will see vendor Thelma pocket R2 360 as vendors sell the magazine for R20, and pocket R10 for each copy they sell.
Miss South Africa 2014 finalist Jade Hubner is giving The Big Issue vendor Thelma a day off. She will sell copies of the The Big Issue for a full day on the streets of Cape Town, and donate the money she makes to Thelma. Hubner hopes to sell at least 100 magazines.
Hubner chose to highlight the good work of The Big Issue as her ‘Need Nomination’. She will sell The Big on the corner of Buitengracht Street and Hans Strijdom Street tomorrow, Tuesday 4 March 2014, from 07h30 until 17h30.
Thelma gave Hubner some tips to keep her going for the day. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and take water and lunch. “You must take time for lunch to give you more energy for selling”. It’s not easy spending the whole day on your feet in the sun !”, Thelma said. She will spend her day off doing her household chores and spending time with her grandchildren.
The Big issue creates entrepreneurs on the streets of Cape Town by offering unemployed South Africans to sell the magazine. Vendors buy the magazine for R10 and sell it one for R20. All income from sales and advertising is put back into producing a better magazine and providing jobs and social support for the unemployed and destitute. The Big Issue relies on funding from national and international donors to cover the majority of operating costs.
“It is always so encouraging and heartening to meet a young person who is willing to get involved and make a real contribution,” says managing director of The Big Issue, Trudy Vlok.
“Jade is willing to ‘wear the shoes’ of someone less fortunate for an entire day, and these Big Issue shoes are not for the feint-hearted! It is tough and gruelling out there on the streets, but Jade is determined to make it work. Our vendor, Thelma, is very excited to have a day to herself without the stress of loss of income. Jade is a very special young lady, and she’s one of Cape Town’s very own – just like The Big Issue.”
Vendors buy the magazine for R10 and sell for R20, earning a dignified living for themselves and their families.
