Radio 2000 turns 29 this month and to kickstart the celebrations, the SABC radio with the broadcaster’s foundation visited the Ga-Sekororo, Turkey Village in Limpopo bearing gifts: a mini-van full of educational equipment and toys for the children of Tambo Drop in Centre.
“Radio 2000 prides itself as a public broadcasting station of the SABC, mandated to empower South African citizens. What better way to do this than to invest in children. We always say that the future of this country lies with the children. What are we doing to ensure that the children are well equipped to take on this role? Radio 2000 and the SABC Foundation took this task and invested educational equipment to the community of Ga-Sekororo,“ said Siyanda Fikelepi, Radio 2000 programme manager.
More plans are underway at Radio 2000 during its birthday month as various programmes initiate their own social investment initiatives. To add icing on all these activities, Radio 2000 will close off its birthday month on Friday, 30 January 2015 at Soweto Hotel with a celebrity Bake Out. This initiative will see Radio 2000 presenters and SABC TV celebrities bake a 2m by 1.5m cake and gifts worth R30,000.00 to children living with disabilities.
“Our 29th birthday is not about Radio 2000 but about the listeners who have ensured that the station lives to see 29 years of broadcasting in this competitive South African radio market. We want to thank them for their loyalty and plan to make it even bigger in 2016 when the station celebrates three decades of empowering South African citizens,” said marketing manager Christinah Mazibuko.
