Brand South Africa celebrated Africa Month by participating in the Africa Day celebrations in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday at People’s Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Brand South Africa’s Play Your Part ambassadors who are based in KZN were invited to the celebration and to share their views about what being Africa means to them.
The celebration brought together people from across the continent who celebrated the unity of the African people through culture. The day included food stalls, a street parade and performances by various artists from the continent.
Brand South Africa Play Your Part ambassador and surfing co-ordinator at Umthombo Street Children organisation, Sandile Mqadi, says he came to the Africa Day celebration because “were a rainbow nation in Africa and I’m privileged to be here”.
Mqadi works as a surfing co-ordinator with Umthombo Street Children and works with children who live on the street. “I’m very passionate about this country and I don’t like seeing children living on the street and that’s why I came up with the surfing programme,” he says.
Daryl Naidu, also a Brand South Africa Play Your Part ambassador, was at the Africa Day celebration to enjoy the festivities. He works with the Nelson Mandela Chatsworth Youth Centre that champions an anti-bullying campaign and helps children to positively participle in society through the sport of wrestling.
The Play Your Part programme aims to encourage South Africans to use their time, money, skills or goods to contribute to building a better future for the country.
