The silly news season might be about to begin, but with such big issues on the world agenda, ROi Africa’s latest monitoring has revealed that in South Africa, serious news dominates our online conversations.
South Africa’s news media is dominated by terrorism reporting, ROi Africa reports. South Africa has reported more on terror attacks outside of Paris than within Paris. Other big national stories were shared between 16 Days of Activism and the Cosatu Congress. Big impact about Black Friday and Fees Must Fall still on the charts. On a lighter note, the ‘UFO’ spotted in Cape Town over the weekend and Prince Harry’s polo kept us engaged.
SA social media – 7 days
In terms of social media over the past seven days the Cosatu Congress and #FeesMustFall continue to dominate over 50% of South Africa’s conversation. EFF leader Julius Malema has also made a big contribution with his recent comments about Nelson Mandela and 16 days. While social media might have gone mad over President Jacob Zuma’s giggles in Parliament, the fuss died down pretty quickly.
International news
US holiday, Thanksgiving, was bigger than any other international story this week, 10% bigger than Paris Attacks and almost nine times the size of other terrorism across the world.
