Getaway will put foot through Southern Africa in support of charity. The travel brand is partnering with the organisers of the Put Foot Rally – billed as the “greatest social rally on the face of the earth” – to provide regular updates as the event winds through Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique over the next 17 days.
Getaway’s Tyson Jopson is the official Put Foot blogger, tasked with providing regular commentary via social media platforms, the vehicle for raising money for Project Rhino and the Put Foot Foundation. Already R280 000 has been collected ahead of tomorrow’s dawn departure.
The foundation’s efforts will see the 60 participating crews take part in a ‘shoe drop’ at Senkobo Basic School in Livingstone, Zambia, where they will provide 405 schoolchildren with a pair of new, leather school shoes.
Rally organisers Mountainshak Adventures have also earmarked Project Rhino KZN as beneficiaries of this year’s event. The project is an association of 15 like-minded organisations that have joined together to raise awareness about the drastic increase in rhino poaching in South Africa.
The Put Foot Rally, now in its second year, sees participants depart from Johannesburg or Cape Town today, experiencing the cultures, languages and traditions of Africa as they follow a route of their choice – in any vehicle of their choice – and head for checkpoints at Namibia’s Etosha Park, Zambia’s Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe’s Kariba Dam and Malawi’s Lake Malawi, before finally finishing in Mozambique on 6 July 2012.
