In the true spirit of uBuntu, third year PR students from Boston Media House initiated a Bring a Book campaign for the library at the Soweto Kliptown Youth Centre (SKY). The students managed to collect over 2000 books which they handed over to representatives of the centre on Friday 13 September.
Melissa Pillay (20), a current Boston Media House student, says that giving back to the community is very important. ‘Too many people think that when you give you need to get something back. This is not necessarily the case – you must give for the right reasons – it must come from the heart.’
The students identified the Soweto Kliptown Centre (SKY) and its founder Bob Nameng as an ideal recipient for its campaign as SKY has been the centre of education for the Kliptown community for years. Founded in 1987, SKY has brought hope to many neglected children, elderly citizens, unemployed and sick members of the community.
The centre runs many formal and informal programmes to support children and teens including sports, performance arts, support groups, girls’ empowerment and life skills classes. The library which has been in existence for some time has, however remained empty and this was the perfect opportunity to stock it.
