Just participating in the annual MTN Radio Awards is a commitment to excellence, says its CEO, Lance Rothschild, adding that it is “really encouraging to see the broader radio industry adopt these awards and demonstrate their commitment to making better content for their listeners”.
The fifth annual awards were held in Johannesburg on Saturday night, attended by over 1 200 people reckoned to be the who’s who of the South African radio sector. Entries grew by a whopping 750% this year, with stations participating int he various categories increasing by by 470% since 2010.
“The radio industry, like the mobile telecommunications industry, has to be flexible, agile and receptive to new technologies,” says Brian Gouldie, chief marketing officer of MTN SA. “MTN has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the radio industry, we love radio and in particular, the way radio has very specifically adopted mobile communications and incorporated mobile communications into making increasingly-compelling content.”
Talk Radio 702 walked off with the commercial station of the year award, with Tuks FM winning the campus radio award for station of the year, Umhlobo Wenene the PBS station and Radio Tygerberg the community award. CapeTalk’s John Maytham was commercial winner of the afternoon drive presenter, and John Robbie took the morning drive award for Talk Radio 702.
