CYBERTORIAL*: In a matter of 18 months since its launch, Hot 91.9 FM has managed to propel itself, with lightening speed, straight into the obvious radio gap that existed in Gauteng.
Playing the best ‘Old Skool’ and R&B music, with the most popular radio personalities and Joburg’s Hottest Breakfast Show as well as the most spectacular on-air promotions and off-air presence, it’s been a thrilling journey of change for radio and the station, which is driving innovation and leading change in the industry.
Radio with a cause
“HOT 91.9 FM is about FUN radio with a cause,” says founder and station managing director, Lloyd Madurai. “Not answering to a large corporate conglomerate’s vested commercial interests has resulted in our team putting more joy and passion into our on-air offering. We are packed with talent that have been serving the Gauteng market for decades, so although we’re new, our strong roots and local support run very deep,” he says.
“We have been obsessive about explaining our programming strategy to every member of the HOT team so that we can all live it. Who should do what, when and where, how as well as why. Everyone gets it and that is why we are so committed. That commitment has resulted in greater ratings and increased revenue that is put back into training and development projects as well as helping those in need within our community.”
The station recently formed a strategic alliance with United Stations who are responsible for maximising revenue and making sure that HOT’s advertisers get the best value and service available in the market. Together they are expanding opportunities for clients on-air, on-line, in mobile advertising, videos, events, branded content, activations and through sponsorships.
The people factor
“The people factor is incredible and there is great chemistry between our team and the station and also between programming and sales. It’s a blend of philosophies and business styles and we’re finding that it’s really easy to get things done. In our view, that is what is making HOT 91.9 FM so much more potent than any other radio station out there,” says Rivak Bunce, managing director of United Stations.
The station has already earned a reputation for the many creative ways in which advertisers can become involved with the Hot 91.9 FM audience. Cell C, Nedbank, Tsogo Sun, Sandton City, Incredible Connection, Pick n Pay, Mercedes, Gautrain, Spur, Land Rover, Mango Airlines and Peugeot are just a handful of the major brands who have taken advantage of these opportunities.
The appointment of United Stations also includes representation of content created by the station’s stellar line-up that includes Darren Scott, Jeremy Mansfield, John Walland, Sasha Martinengo, Michaela K, Mark Pilgrim, Kevin Savage, Gavin Singh, Paul Almeida and Treasure Tshabalala, among other radio icons.
