Dentsu Africa Pulse: Five business and marketing signals shaping Africa this week
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

[PARTNER CONTENT] Dentsu Africa Pulse | Week of 25 September 2026

A weekly intelligence briefing tracking the signals shaping business, media, technology, and consumer behaviour across Africa. Created by dentsu Africa’s network of experts across the continent, Pulse helps organisations understand what is changing, why it matters and where opportunity lies next.

Last week, a challenge from Dawn Rowlands at the IMC Nedbank Conference sparked debate across boardrooms and businesses. Africa has spent decades being described as the continent of potential. The more important question today is no longer what Africa could become, but what Africa intends to build, own and lead.

Ingrid von Stein, dentsu Africa strategic communications lead, gives five signals worth paying attention to this week.

Africa is moving from potential to ownership

Across business, technology and innovation, the conversation is increasingly shifting from participation to ownership.

Ownership of platforms. Ownership of technologies. Ownership of intellectual property. Ownership of value creation.

Africa has been viewed as a market of future opportunity. Increasingly, African businesses are asking a different question: who owns the assets, ecosystems and innovations that create value?

Africa Implication: The next phase of African growth will not be defined by access alone. It will be defined by ownership.

Opportunity: Brands should be investing beyond market share and into capability creation. The organisations that build platforms, intellectual property, data assets, and proprietary technologies will create disproportionate long-term value.

The pitch is changing. Proof is becoming more important than presentations

Across global markets, agency selection is increasingly influenced by demonstrated outcomes, specialist expertise, technology capability, and trusted relationships before formal review processes even begin.

While major pitches remain common, marketers are narrowing consideration sets and placing greater emphasis on proven performance, category expertise, data capability, governance, and operational maturity. Procurement teams and specialist consultants are also playing a growing role in agency evaluation and selection.

What is driving the shift?

The cost of pitching is under scrutiny

Large scale reviews consume considerable time, resources, and budget. Increasingly, organisations are asking whether a lengthy pitch process is necessary when capability and record are already visible.

Capability has become more important than credentials.

Agencies are being assessed on:

  • Data and measurement capability
  • AI readiness
  • Commerce expertise
  • Technology integration
  • Customer experience design
  • Business transformation capability

Creative excellence remains critical but increasingly forms part of a broader capability evaluation.

Brands are prioritising lower execution risk

Questions around continuity, governance, scalability, talent retention, and commercial impact are becoming increasingly important during agency selection processes.

Africa Implication: An agency’s competitive advantage is increasingly established before the pitch process begins. Visibility of expertise demonstrated impact and market leadership are becoming as important as presentation performance.

Opportunity: The agencies most likely to win in the next decade will prove:

  • Commercial impact
  • Measurable outcomes
  • Deep category expertise
  • AI and technology capability
  • Strong leadership
  • Cultural intelligence
  • A distinctive point of view

The new question: If the client removed the pitch tomorrow, would they still choose you?

Brands are becoming media companies

The distinction between advertiser, creator and publisher continues to blur.

Across markets, brands are producing always-on content, building communities, and creating direct audience relationships that extend far beyond traditional campaign cycles.

Consumers increasingly follow expertise, entertainment, and relevance rather than institutions.

Africa Implication: Audience attention continues to fragment across platforms, creators, and communities.

The brands that win will not necessarily be those with the biggest budgets, but those with the strongest relationships.

Opportunity: Move from campaign thinking to audience ownership thinking.

Build communities. Build subscriber bases. Build recurring engagement.

Do not rent attention. Own it.

AI adoption is no longer the differentiator. Operational integration is.

The AI conversation is evolving. Access to tools is becoming widespread. The real gap is emerging between organisations experimenting with AI and organisations embedding AI into workflows, operations, decision making, and customer experience.

Africa Implication: Competitive advantage is shifting away from access to technology and towards organisational readiness.

The next divide will not be between companies with AI and companies without it.

It will be between companies that use AI occasionally and companies that operate differently because of it.

Opportunity: Stop measuring experimentation.

Start measuring:

  • Productivity gained
  • Costs reduced
  • Speed increased
  • Revenue created
  • Customer experience improved

The winners will not have more tools. They will make better decisions faster.

Trust is becoming the world’s most valuable business asset

As consumers encounter increasing volumes of AI generated content, synthetic media and algorithmically influenced information, trust is becoming harder to earn and easier to lose.

In a world of content abundance, credibility becomes scarce.

Africa Implication: Brands can no longer compete on visibility alone.

Trust, transparency, and consistency are becoming critical competitive differentiators.

Opportunity: Treat trust as a growth asset.

Invest in authenticity. Invest in transparency. Invest in long term customer relationships.

As content becomes easier to generate, credibility becomes harder to replicate.

Dentsu Pulse Point

For years, Africa’s story was framed around potential.

These next few years will be defined by ownership. Ownership of ideas. Ownership of technology. Ownership of audiences. Ownership of intellectual property. Ownership of value creation.

The organisations that thrive will not simply adapt to the future. They will create it. Inspired by the challenge posed by Dawn Rowlands at the IMC Nedbank Conference.

See the signal. Understand the implication. Act with confidence.

Dentsu Africa helps brands turn signals into strategy, and strategy into growth.
