RAMS: New favourite on list

Gagasi 99.5 FM is now one of the ten most popular radio stations in the country, according to the South African Advertising Research Foundation’s (Saarf) latest RAMS presentation.

According to the February 2008 RAMS (Radio Audience Measurement Survey) release, Gagasi is a “newcomer” to the list of favourite national radio stations, at no. 10.

Ukhozi FM is at the top of the list, followed by Umhlobo Wenene FM, Lesedi, Thobela and Motsweding.

Metro FM is in 6!_LT_SUPth!_LT_/SUP place, the SABC’s Afrikaans station RSG on no. 7, followed by East Coast Radio and 94.2 Jacaranda.

A year ago (RAMS, February 2007), the first eight stations on the national top ten list were the same. Munghana Lonene FM was at no. 9 and Jacaranda at 10.

According to the latest results, based on information gathered from 18,923 radio diary keepers 16 years and older, the average number of stations people listen to per week, is two.

align=leftIn total, 28.635-million (92% of the adult population) South Africans listen to radio. In the February 2007 release, it was 28.609-million.

Some of the significant increases in individual stations’ listenership figures include:

Gagasi: A year-on-year increase in Past 7 Days and Average Monday to Friday listenership. Total Past 7 Days listenership is at 1.508-million (942,000 in February ’07).

Kaya FM 95.9: A year-on-year increase in Past 7 Days and Average Monday to Friday listenership. The first increased from 979,000 to 1.383-million since the February 2007 release.

IKwekwezi FM: An increase in Past 7 Days listenership in metropolitan areas and in the group LSM6 and above. Its total 7 Days listenership is at 1.578-million (1.485-million in November ’07).

Metro FM: An increase in Past 7 Days listenership in Johannesburg. The total Past 7 Days listenership, is however, lower than the previous release at 5.255-million (compared with 5.272-million).

Talk Radio 702: An increase in Past 7 Days listenership on the Reef. Total Past 7 Days listenership is at 406,000 (360,000 in November ’07).

94.5 Kfm: A year-on-year decline in Average Monday to Friday listenership; from 811,000 to 653,000.

Lesedi FM: A year-on-year decline in Average Monday to Friday listenership; from 2.544-million to 2.280-million.

OFM: The Average Monday to Friday listenership has dropped from 373,000 to 294,000 since February 2007.

Radiokansel/Radio Pulpit: A decrease in Past 7 Days and Average Monday to Friday listenership. The first is now at 190,000 compared with 464,000 in February 2007.

Ukhozi: A drop in the Average Monday to Friday listenership; from 4.434-million to 4.035-million since February 2007.

Umhlobo Wenene: A year-on-year decline in Average Monday to Friday listenership; from 3.432-million to 3.150-million since February 2007.

94.7 Highveld Stereo and Motsweding: A decline in Past 7 Days listenership in Pretoria. Highveld’s total Past 7 Days listenership is at 1.192-million (1.226-million in November ’07). Motsweding’s decreased from 2.926-million to 2.880-million since the previous release.
