Data journalism is a hot buzzword among journalists in South Africa these days, yet very few journalists or newsrooms are actually practicing it. A big part of the problem is that journalists believe that they need to be tech ninjas to be a data journalist.
You don’t! Bottom line: It’s dataJOURNALISM not DATAjournalism.
Code4SA is running a Winter School next month aimed at working journos who want to learn how to do data-driven storytelling. During the course we’ll reverse engineer the process, starting with stories we’ve found in data and then explaining how we did it, as well as teaching you how to use the tools we used.
We’ll also be offering some training on social media verification and the free tools available for journos, to teach participants how to do the journalism before sharing or retweeting, or using it as a source in your reporting.
The course will run over three days from August 17 to 19 in Cape Town and partial or full subsidies are available. Follow the link for more details and the application form.
