Media Moves… TheMediaOnline’s weekly round up. Dan Monyane joins eNCA. New style editor at FINESSE magazine. Ashley Hayden departs Jacaranda FM. adidas SA welcomes new managing director. 702 and 567 announce change to Weekend Breakfasts. Travis Brown heads up Mall Fusion. TEAMtalk media secures exclusive rights to English Premier League data in SA. The shoe still fits at Glass Slipper. Algoa FM’s warm hearts fire up online!

This week’s BIG move: Dan Monyane joins eNCA

eNews Channel Africa (eNCA)  has confirmed that veteran radio and TV broadcaster Dan Moyane will be joining the channel from 1 July. Moyane will co-anchor Morning News Today with Ayanda Allie-Paine from 6am to 9am weekdays.

Group head of news, Patrick Conroy, says eNCA is delighted to have Moyane back on board.
”Dan is one of the most experienced broadcasters in South Africa having worked for the BBC, 702 and eNews previously. We’re delighted he has chosen to join our on air team.”

Conroy says Moyane’s return to the channel will strengthen the channel’s line-up. Moyane will continue to play a role in the corporate sector where currently he is corporate affairs executive of MMI Holdings Limited.

“There will be some minor changes in line-up within the next few months. We will be adding to our team, not subtracting. Also returning to eNCA after a year-long study break is Nikiwe Bikitsha. We will confirm Nikiwe Bikitsha’s role in due course. She very kindly returned early from the United States to assist with our coverage of former President Nelson Mandela. We still have a few things to finalise but we are thrilled to have her back too,” Says Conroy.

Gareth Edwards will move from the morning slot to anchor news from 9am until 1pm. No other line-up changes are scheduled for July.

Eleni Giokos will be taking a well-deserved break in August after joining eNCA a year ago from CNBC Africa. Giokos has now been offered a full-time contract with eNCA and will be enjoying a holiday in Greece before returning to play a more prominent role within the business.

“We are beefing up, not making wholesale changes. Moyane’s return to eNCA signals our intention to add gravitas to key areas of our business” says Conroy.

“We are in discussion with a number of senior TV news people and look forward to announcing more additions to our team in the next few months”.

Moyane says he is looking forward to his return to TV news. “I am thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to once again be a member of the eNCA news team. I look forward to playing my part in eNCA and its exciting future plans ”

Who’s moved where

New style editor at FINESSE magazine

Ryno Mulder has been appointed as style editor of South Africa’s feel-good lifestyle magazine for Afrikaans women – FINESSE, published by Carpe Diem Media.

Mulder is no stranger to Carpe Diem Media, having worked in the publishing house’s magazine division before. In the interim Mulder has regularly created fashion and beauty editorials for Bona, Shimmer and True Love magazines as well as being the grooming writer for Destiny Man. He also styled the wardrobe on SABC’s Life With Thami and kykNET’s Glam Guru TV shows.

Mulder  also co-authored Hannon’s brand new beauty book Maklik Mooi, to hit the shelves next month.  “I’m excited to return to the FINESSE brand as it is moving into the digital era,” Mulder says. “Our readers will be thrilled to engage with their favourite title in a multitude of new ways while enjoying the most relevant and practical beauty trends and style advice on offer.”

“We’re happy to have Ryno on board again,” says Venessa Schoeman, editor and Brand Director of FINESSE. “With over a decade’s experience in the media, Ryno is well-known to advertisers and has a keen understanding of the market. We look forward to growing our brand with him on our team.

702 and 567 announce change to Weekend Breakfasts

Africa Melane is now hosting the Weekend Breakfast shows on Talk Radio 702 and 567 Cape Talk, as of 22 June. He has taken over from Kgomotso Matsunyane who had been hosting both the Saturday and Sunday morning shows from 07h00 to 10h00 for the past six months.

“We thank Kgomotso for running the show with her trademark exuberance and passion, and we wish her the best for her future,” said Talk Radio 702 station manager, Pheladi Gwangwa. “Strategically, the Weekend Breakfast show is going to move in a slightly different direction, and we have identified Africa Melane to steer the show,” she added.

Melane has a long association with 567 CapeTalk and Talk Radio 702. He is current host of the weekday afternoon drive show on 567 CapeTalk, and has served a stint as programming manager for the station.

“Africa has an exceptional understanding of our listeners, through his on and off-air experience, and has proved more than capable of handling a diverse range of issues – just what we need on Weekend Breakfasts,” said 567 CapeTalk station manager, Colleen Louw.

Gauteng listeners will also be familiar with his voice as he has filled in for numerous presenters on Talk Radio 702 over the years.

Ashley Hayden departs Jacaranda FM

Seasoned radio and television personality Ashley Hayden has announced her decision to leave the Jacaranda FM Complimentary Breakfast at the end of June. Hayden’s decision comes at the end of her 18-month stint as a member of the prime time morning team alongside Rian van Heerden, Dianne Broodryk and Robbie Kruse which saw the new look breakfast show grow its English-speaking audience, as well as cementing its position in the Afrikaans market.

Hayden has opted not to renew her contract with the radio station, saying she was finding it increasingly difficult to juggle her full-time role at Jacaranda FM with other commitments in the media space.

She said the taxing working hours for a morning show presenter had also taken their toll on her young family and she was looking forward to a more flexible working lifestyle, enabling her to reconnect with her children and be part of their daily routine again. “My time on prime time morning radio has been an incredible opportunity, and I look forward to using this experience to take my career in media to another level,” says Hayden.

adidas SA welcomes new managing director

adidas SA has announced the appointment of Roddy Van Breda as managing director of adidas South Africa, effective 1 August 2013.

In his new function, Van Breda will report directly to Osman Ayaz, managing director of Emerging Markets. Van Breda has been with the adidas Group since 2003 and was most recently responsible for the wholesale business, in his role as sales director of adidas South Africa.

In this function, Van Breda has successfully expanded the distribution of the adidas brand in South Africa through strong strategic partnerships with adidas’ key retail partners and was responsible for driving further growth – both in topline sales and in market share.

Van Breda has great experience, knowledge and an in-depth understanding of the sporting goods industry, as well as a solid track record within the South African market.  As the new Managing Director, Roddy will continue to lead the development and growth of the adidas business in the key African territories.

Travis Brown heads up Mall Fusion

Primedia Unlimited subsidiary Mall Fusion, previously part of the Primedia Lifestyle Group, has become a standalone business focusing on events and sponsorships and falls under the Mall Division banner. Current general manager of sister company Mall Active Travis Brown is taking leadership of both companies.

“Travis has proven his mettle in the activation space over and over again, and we’re excited to see him grow the Mall Fusion business,” says Molefi Moloantoa, CEO of the Mall Division. “Working closely with Travis is Mmapula Mothapo in the position of Head of Events and Sponsorships who has a wealth of activation experience behind her.”

Mall Fusion’s speciality includes event management and sponsorship and will compliment all advertisers already in the shopping mall advertising space.

“Mall Fusion works across any and all malls, not just those which form part of the Primedia Lifestyle Group client base,” says Molefi. “While it forms part of Unlimited’s Mall Division it will now also aggressively pursue securing its own new business.”

Who’s won what

TEAMtalk media secures exclusive rights to English Premier League data in SA

TEAMtalk media has reacquired the exclusive South African data license for the English Premier League for the next three years. Having previously represented the world’s most popular football league through its acquisition of PA Sport South Africa in 2011, this time the digital sports media group won the rights following a competitive bidding process.

The deal, which will come into effect at the start of the 2013/14 season, will run for three seasons and will see TEAMtalk being granted exclusivity in South Africa and co-selling rights on the rest of the continent.

Providing sports news and data to major players around the globe, the company has a well-established client base which includes Sky Sports, SuperSport, Primedia, Times Media, Naspers, as well as Orange, Virgin, MTN, Vodacom, MSN, Yahoo, amongst others.

“Football in Africa is a rapidly growing market,” said TEAMtalk media’s general manager Ant Pascoe, “And the EPL is the one league that transcends all national boundaries and which engages and attracts fans from throughout the continent. We look forward to using our relationships with the biggest leagues and data companies in Europe not only to deliver quality products to an African audience, but also to help take African leagues and the players to Europe.”

The shoe still fits at Glass Slipper

Since embarking on its seven-step recovery plan to long-term sustainability, Air Mauritius has continued to climb and gain altitude, despite mounting challenges which still face the global aviation and travel industry.

The national carrier recently announced the reintroduction of its Durban route, effective 05 July, 2013, and is said to become instrumental within the KZN territory and Dube TradePort, within the coming months.

Air Mauritius has also confirmed the renewal of its local PR and marketing contract. For a third consecutive year, Rivonia-based Glass Slipper Communications will continue to work side-by-side the Air Mauritius Team, in realising its new strategic goals, which extend the airline’s route map, far beyond the magical island. This with a view and core focus, to deliver new tourism revenue streams, back into the Mauritian economy.

Who’s making moves

Warm hearts fire up online!

Eastern Cape and Garden Route listeners have been so generous and warm hearted in supporting the annual Algoa FM Winter Woolly Week campaign that it is going online as well.

“Listeners have told us that they want to be able to donate money to enable the campaign to meet specific needs – be it for blankets, jackets or jerseys,” says Algoa FM marketing manager Toinette Koumpan.

“Throughout the month of June, we’re challenging all listeners, corporates, businesses and schools to donate funds online and help us reach our goal in addition to hundreds of winter woollies,” she says.

“I think the increased involvement and the numerous companies who have shown their interest in getting involved in this year’s Algoa FM Winter Woolly Week project shows the growth of the initiative in our broadcast area”, says Koumpan.

Anyone who would like to donate online can visit www.algoafm.co.za. Those who would like to make the traditional donation of warm goodies can still do so at any Caltex service station in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route. Alternative drop-off points are also available on the website.
