Designers, creatives, coders and techies: fire up your brains, sharpen your pencils, polish your screwdrivers or soldering irons, and get ready to hack – entries have opened for this year’s Break.Make.Create. (#BreakMakeCreate15) hackathon.

Break.Make.Create. is the brainchild of digital and interactive agency Hellocomputer, and was created to not only improve the skill set of the marketing industry, but to give all creative, technical minded and innovative thinkers the chance to tinker, craft and play.

The inaugural #BreakMakeCreate hackathon took place last year in the Mother City, where 13 teams came together to battle it out and win R10 000 in a hack themed ‘Hack for Music’.

This year, #BreakMakeCreate moves to Johannesburg and, in keeping with its reputation as the City of Industry, the theme is ‘Nine to Five’. Participants will hack the daily grind, whether it’s work, studying or other. Hack a printer, a desk or even a colleague – as long as it’s work related, anything goes.

“#BreakMakeCreate 2014 in Cape Town was the first of Hellocomputer’s hacks open to the broader industry and public,” said Hellocomputer ECD, Mark Tomlinson. “It was a huge success with the teams interpreting the ‘Hack for Music’ theme to come up with ideas such as musical chairs with a twist, musical shoes and Lego-inspired DJ set. Team ‘The Sound and the Fury’ came out on top by making a computer game controlled by hacked musical instruments. I’m looking forward to seeing what this year’s teams make of ‘Nine to Five’.”

#BreakMakeCreate15 Hackathon takes place over two days (September 4 and 5) at the Digital Innovation Zone in Braamfontein, the tech and innovation hub of Johannesburg. It will be limited to 10 teams competing for a first place prize of R10 000 while the runners-up will walk away with R5000 in their pocket. Hack kits, snacks and plenty of caffeine will be provided to participants to get their creative juices flowing.

If you think you have a team that can break, make and create something awesome and want to join in on the hack, visit www.breakmakecreate.com to register your team and get all the information.
