Businesses and individuals across KwaZulu-Natal have opened their hearts and wallets contributing a record R1.244 million to East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game. The station hosted a marathon 12 hour broadcast and telethon from the Pavilion Shopping Centre as part of the campaign’s Corporate Day challenge.

Darren Maule and the East Coast Breakfast team kicked off Corporate Day at 6am, raising more than R428 000 by 9am. Music and sport stars joined the Challenge throughout the day and the team celebrated the R1 million at 2.20pm.

The celeb list included AKA, Lloyd Cele, MasterChef winner Roxi Wardman, Cell C Sharks players Daniel and Jean-Luc du Preez, Sunfoil Dolphins stars Brandon Scullard and Robbie Frylinck, TV personality Patricia Lewis, Durban band Veranda Panda, Sketchy Bongo, Kyle Deutsch, actor Thato Molamu, Majozi, Gangs of Ballet and eThekwini speaker Logie Naidoo

“If you want to see change in our country, you have to play a part,” says Molamu. “You can’t just sit back and not get involved. Helping children is one way of doing this.” AKA agrees. “I’m so happy to be involved in this amazing initiative,” he told ECR’s Jane Linley-Thomas. “Call me guys, I’ll be answering the phone.”

By the time Damon Beard and the East Coast Drive team brought the curtain down on Corporate Day at 6pm, KZN had pledged a whopping R1 244 712 million.

Now in its 15th year, East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game is aimed at giving a new toy to every child in a government hospital, crèche and children’s home in KZN. The campaign also provides food parcels for underprivileged children. Every cent of the money raised today goes towards buying food parcels for underprivileged children in the province, in particular child-headed households. Each food parcel is valued at R350 and contains items that can feed a family of four to six for up to six weeks. This ensures the children do not go hungry over the long end-of-year school holidays.

“Thank you KZN for generously answering our call for help,” says East Coast Radio’s General Manager, Boni Mchunu. “You have made it possible for us to spread joy to some of our province’s most destitute children. Thank you so much!”

If you missed the chance to pledge to the campaign today, there is still time to make a contribution. East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game wraps up on 15 December 2015. Banking details are:
