[PRESS OFFICE] Arena is hiring an economics reporter, reporting to the news editor at BusinessLIVE, Business Day and BDTV. The position is based in Johannesburg.
To identify, investigate and write news reports, opinion and analysis on economic data and indicators and the political economy to further strengthen Business Day’s leadership in this field.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES
- Rapidly and accurately report on key economic data and indicators, analysing their implications for the political economy.
- Deliver insightful analysis and value-added commentary to enhance understanding of economic trends and policies.
- Build and maintain a robust network of contacts in government, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and the private sector to support comprehensive reporting.
- Attention to detail.
- Proactively pitch engaging story ideas and accept assignments from editors, ensuring alignment with editorial objectives.
- Actively participate in editorial meetings to contribute to BDTV’s economics coverage and foster teamwork.
- Consistently meet established style guidelines and deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethical journalism in all reporting.
REQUIREMENTS
- Excellent all-round ability in written and spoken English;
- Relevant tertiary qualification.
- At least five years’ experience.
- Attention to detail.
- The ability to establish and maintain relationships with credible sources of information.
- Highly motivated and able to work both independently and as a team player.
- Good research abilities.
- A thorough knowledge of journalistic ethics and media law.
CANDIDATES SHOULD ALSO HAVE:
- A wide-ranging interest in economics, politics and the political economy.
- An understanding of economics and key aspects of economic theory and practice.
- A broad general knowledge.
