The cream of Afrikaans artists excelled at the Huisgenoot-Tempo Awards night at Gold Reef City, Gauteng, where the annual Tempo winners were announced. Some 116 000 readers voted in their favourite categories while several new categories created great excitement.
Among the new categories introduced Presenter of the Year proved most popular, with Pieter Koen of the programme Jukebox on kykNET taking top honours. Special awards were also made for the first time, including the Huisgenoot-Tempo for Excellence in Afrikaans which went to writer Deon Meyer, while Joost van der Westhuizen was honoured as Personality of the Year.
Izelle Venter, editor in chief of Huisgenoot, says this year’s Tempo Awards were expanded to embrace the Afrikaans milieu in its totality. “It’s a real pleasure to see all our talent assembled in one list. It has made us at Huisgenoot feel a renewed sense of being proudly Afrikaans and South African again. This is in part also why we present the Tempos – to demonstrate to our achievers how much we appreciate them. And especially to thank our readers without whom our stars would really have a hard time.”
“Readers have shown in their voting that they enjoy renewal,” says Wicus Pretorius, deputy editor of Huisgenoot and project manager of the Tempo Awards. “One thing is beyond doubt: The Tempo Awards, and the enthusiasm with which people take part in them, show it’s only ever becoming more fun to be Afrikaans.”
