South African radio – commercial, public service, community and campus – was honoured at the Liberty Radio Awards in Johannesburg on Saturday night.
John Robbie was awarded the Lifetime Achiever Award while KayaFM walked away with Commercial Station of the Year. Jacaranda’s Martin Bester took Afternoon Drive Presenter and the station’s The Complimentary Breakfast won best Breakfast Show. KFM’s Ryan O’Connor took the Breakfast Presenter slot and PowerFM’s Power Drive was judged top Afternoon Drive Show.
The SABC’s Umhlobo Wenene was awarded Best PBS Station and the station’s Mpumulelo Mali won Best Content Producer. Uhkozi won Best Breakfast Show with the Vuka Mzansi Breakfast Show. Lotus FM won best News and Actuality Show in the PBS category for Walk the Talk with Alan Khan. SAfm’s Nomsa Mdhluli took Best News Reader in PBS.
Radio Islam’s Rev it Up won Best Night Time Show as well as Best Afternoon Show for Your World Today in the Community category. Hot 919’s Simon Parkinson won Best Afternoon Drive Presenter and Darren Scott took Morning Drive honours at the same station as did the show, Joburg’s Hottest Breakfast Show.
“I was particularly pleased with the number of entries that we received,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the Liberty Radio Awards. “Thanks to Liberty’s foresight in sponsoring the awards, radio stations and personalities have a platform to benchmark their performance and to strive to meet higher standards of excellence in their craft. The quality and depth of entries was remarkable and the adjudicators had a difficult time sorting out the best of the best, all of which bodes well for the future of radio.”
Liberty’s Sydney Mbhele said radio played a critical role in the lives of most South Africans. “… it is their primary source of information and entertainment – sponsoring these awards enables us to contribute towards raising the standard of radio broadcasting, ultimately resulting in stations providing more compelling fare for their listeners,” the company’s chief marketing officer said. “This, in turn, leads to better dissemination of valuable knowledge that empowers listeners with vital information; we trust that building on the successes of the radio industry will help us on building on our successes as a society – which is one of Liberty’s core values.”
