The SABC will host 154 interns during the 2026/27 financial year as its partnership with MICT SETA continues to provide graduates with workplace experience and, increasingly, pathways into employment.
The public broadcaster will take on 120 interns through its partnership with the Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA), with a further 34 interns coming through other stakeholder partnerships.
The programme has seen a marked increase in the number of interns moving into employment at the SABC.
In the 2024/25 financial year, 110 interns joined the broadcaster through the MICT SETA partnership. Of these, 103 completed the programme and 23 were subsequently employed by the SABC.
In 2025/26, 108 interns participated, with 85 completing the programme and 70 securing employment opportunities within the organisation.
Investment impact
Technology and News & Current Affairs have consistently recorded strong intern absorption rates, according to the SABC, pointing to the value of workplace experience in developing skills for areas of operational need.
The SABC has also hosted 40 interns over the past two financial years through partnerships with other external stakeholders.
Rachel Masuku, SABC Group Executive for HR, said the partnership with MICT SETA had created opportunities for young South Africans to enter the broadcasting and media industries.
“For many years, the SABC and MICT SETA have partnered to create opportunities for young South Africans to enter the world of work and develop careers in broadcasting and media,” she said.
Masuku said some current SABC employees had originally joined the organisation as interns more than two decades ago.
“Their journeys demonstrate the lasting impact of investing in young talent and providing meaningful career opportunities,” she said.
Career pathways
She added that the growing number of interns being employed by the SABC reflected the programme’s role in creating career pathways and developing skills for the future workplace.
MICT SETA acting CEO Bontle Mokoena said the partnership demonstrated the value of workplace learning in improving graduates’ employment prospects.
“Our longstanding partnership with the SABC reflects a shared commitment to empowering young South Africans through skills development and workplace learning opportunities,” Mokoena said.
She said MICT SETA would continue to strengthen partnerships with industry to support job creation and develop the talent pipeline for the future economy.
The latest intake takes the total number of interns hosted by the SABC during the 2026/27 financial year to 154.
