ANC president Jacob Zuma addressed the FBJ at this “off-the-record” briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg.
SAHRC spokesperson Vincent Moaga said on Monday (25 February) a public seminar was one of the ways in which the commission could deal with a complaint.
Moaga said Talk Radio 702 editor Katy Katopodis, who had laid a complaint with the SAHRC about the FBJ’s “blatant display of racism” (Katopodis’s words) in banning white journalists from the event, and Abbey Makoe, chairperson of the FBJ’s steering committee, had agreed to attend.
“We hope this will provide a platform to deal with the complaint…
“It is an issue with social and political implications,” Moaga said.
He said the commission would decide how to proceed with the complaint based on the input it gets at the seminar.
Rapport reported on Sunday that the FBJ had laid a complaint with the SAHRC against reporters of Talk Radio 702 following their alleged aggressive behaviour at the meeting on Friday.R
Sapa/M&Gonline reported Talk Radio 702’s Kieno Kammies and Yusuf Abramjee, Primedia Broadcasting’s group head of news and talk programming, had laid a complaint with the SAHRC after allegedly being called “coconuts” by people attending Friday’s FBJ meeting.
Moaga, however, said on Wednesday (27 February) Katopodis’s complaint was the only formal complaint related to the matter recorded by the SAHRC’s complaints office.
“… we have been receiving emails from individuals but they did not indicate whether they were lodging formal complaints or just wanted to share their views with the Commission,” Moaga said.
The public seminar will take place on Wednesday, 5 March, at the SAHRC offices in Parktown, Johannesburg, from 09:00 to 13:00. The address is: 29 Princess of Wales Terrace, corner of York and St Andrews Street.
