Who’s moved where
Acceleration Media draws former Ogilvy, JWT exec as GM
Acceleration Media has appointed experienced marketing and communications specialist Stephanie Houslay as its new general manager. She will be based in Cape Town, where she will lead Acceleration Media’s growth in the Western Cape region.
The company has also announced that Diane Charton, its Cape Town-based managing director will be leaving the company to take up the role of managing director at the Red & Yellow School of Advertising.
Houslay brings broad and deep marketing experience on both the agency and client sides to her role as general manager of Acceleration Media. Her experience includes time spent working on above and below the line advertising accounts for TBWA and Ogilvy in South Africa.
During a four-year stay in the UK, she worked on the Nokia and Vodafone accounts for J.Walter Thompson and also filled the role of UK marketing manager for South African Tourism. She has lectured marketing students at the University of Johannesburg and the Oxford Business School in the UK.
“We are sad to see Diane go, since she has played such a central role in Acceleration Media’s growth over the past six and half years. She leaves a company that is in excellent shape to keep expanding in South Africa’s fast-growing digital marketing landscape,” says Acceleration Media CEO Tony Sousa.
“At the same time, we are delighted to bring a marketing professional with Stephanie’s experience and expertise on board. Her intimate knowledge of tech brands and her holistic understanding of marketing will be major assets for Acceleration Media as we grow our business.”
Farquhar new deputy for Continental’s Africa ops
Continental Outdoor Media has announced the appointment of John Farquhar as the deputy-managing director for the company’s Rest of Africa (RoA) operations. Farquhar will report to RoA MD, Adelaide McKelvey.
“John’s history in the outdoor advertising industry in South Africa has been long and fruitful. His experience led him to be appointed as our Zambian office MD, where he has shone; we therefore feel it fit to promote him in a role that will allow him to serve the rest of Africa in this significant growth period,” said McKelvey.
Farquhar first joined Continental Outdoor Media 14 years ago as sales director. In 2011, he was appointed as MD for Continental Outdoor Media, Zambia. His new designation however will see him based at the Johannesburg head office.
Changing of the guard at RamsayMedia
RamsayMedia’s managing director, Stuart Lowe, will be leaving the company with effect from mid-December, chairman Alan Ramsay has announced. A number of factors influenced this development, he said, noting that Lowe’s enthusiasm, energy and passion for the business will be sorely missed.
“This is very unfortunate and we are sorry to see Stuart go, but we have a strong team of editorial and business leaders who look forward to an interesting and prosperous 2013. The market segments in which we operate are presently very buoyant within the difficult broad economy, so we are positive about what the new year will produce,” he added.
“We will continue to sharpen our focus on the fundamentals of a successful media business to ensure we have maximum participation from our highly talented team leaders and staff members and to capitalise on the many business opportunities that exist in the special-interest markets we serve.”
Alan Ramsay will take responsibility for operation leadership of the company in the short term.
Primedia Africa bolsters sales and marketing team
Julie Ntokozo Mkhonta is the new sales and marketing executive at Primedia Africa. Her focus is to grow the company’s revenue, entrench a culture of accountability within all sales teams and to enhance visible change in the way Primedia Africa is seen in its current markets.
“We’re very pleased to have Julie on our team,” says Frikkie Cornelius, CEO of Primedia Africa. “Over her years in the industry she’s gained invaluable experience in the world of TV, print, radio and now in the outdoor space and she has already established sustainable relationships with many advertisers and media agencies. We’re confident she’ll make a positive contribution to our business and our team.”
Julie originated from the media industry with qualifications from the AAA School of advertising and the Vega school of advertising. In addition, she worked with the Financial Mail, Business Day and Summit TV brands before joining our national broadcaster where she worked for seven years. Last year, Julie completed a marketing and communications course at the business school of the University of the Free State.
Editor for SAB’s employee magazine appointed
New Media has appointed Erika Bornman as editor to direct the transformation of SAB Leaders Magazine “to an inclusive people-centric read, which is a real perk to the company’s employees,” says Andrew Nunneley, New Media’s business development director.
“While SAB is well-known to the public as an industry leader, the company shares New Media’s belief that staff engagement is as critical as customer engagement,” said Nunneley. “We were chosen because we were able to closely and clearly tie the editorial strategy to SAB’s business strategy and objectives. We have the experience it takes to put together a vibrant magazine that people will want to read, while still ensuring that each page of the magazine is there because it supports an element of the client’s business strategy.”
Who’s won what
New Media’s got the right brew for SAB Employee Mag
The creativity and strategic thinking of leading content marketer New Media are clearly on tap, as evidenced by their recent win of a competitive pitch for the publication of SAB Leaders Magazine. New Media, who already handle internal communications for Multichoice and First National Bank, will take over the publication of SAB’s employee magazine, with the first issue under their direction distributed this month (November).
With a print run of 7000, the monthly A4 magazine reaches all employees of the company’s beer division, and has the crisp look and feel of a glossy consumer magazine. The 40-page issue is filled with high quality imagery and engaging editorial, giving the employees a great read while reflecting the positive culture of SAB.
“SAB today is a result of the hard work and dedication of many thousands of men and women who have worked for the company over the last 117 years,” said Robyn Chalmers, SAB Head of Media and Communications. “One of our cornerstone values is that our people are our enduring advantage. Our success as a business is determined by how well employees understand our strategic priorities and the part they play in delivering on our goals. Under New Media’s direction, we believe that Leaders will play a vital role in engaging our colleagues and developing true ambassadors for our company and our brands from within our own ranks.”
Waggener Edstrom sees sustained growth with key client wins in 2012
Integrated communications agency, Waggener Edstrom, has experienced 41% year-on-year revenue growth in South Africa during 2012, demonstrated by a number of key client wins in technology and renewable energy, strengthening its offering across these sectors.
In technology, Cisco, Mustek, Global Micro, and SAS joined the client portfolio, testimony to the agency’s expertise in driving communications strategy in domains such as networks, cloud computing, personal computing, infrastructure and data analytics.
The agency has diversified further into the renewable energy sector and is now working with Canadian Solar, providing communications and marketing support to one of the world’s largest solar companies.
“Our strategic approach, deliberate sector focus and talented consultants are at the centre of our sustained growth” said Marcus Sorour, general manager, Waggener Edstrom South Africa. “Our clients appreciate our deep understanding of their businesses and the target audience insights we use to provide integrated communications services across paid, earned and owned channels.”
Etiket enters KZN with Elan appointment
Etiket has been appointed the advertising agency for eLan Developments, a KwaZulu-Natal-based premier property development, marketing and sales company.
The appointment also reconfirms Etiket’s growth trajectory that now sees it extending its services to KwaZulu-Natal. The agency recently won two gold Pendorings at the Pendoring Advertising Awards and enjoyed massive growth since opening its doors five years ago.
Effective immediately, Etiket will work very closely with eLan to develop campaigns that are tailored to create all-important awareness around the group’s various fields of expertise and its overall impact on the property landscape.
Says Tiaan Ras, strategic relationship director at Etiket: “The eLan appointment represents two important elements for us as an agency; our partnership with a premier property developer; and the extension of our business to KwaZulu-Natal. No doubt we have some exciting times ahead.”

Who’s making moves
Prezence Digital partners with bidorbuy
Prezence Digital, one of South Africa’s leading digital agencies and native mobile app specialists, have partnered with bidorbuy.co.za, Africa’s largest online marketplace, to extend their mobile offerings into a world-class app for Android devices.
Bidorbuy, which is the country’s leading online marketplace, bringing buyers and sellers together to trade almost anything through online auctions and fixed price sales, was voted the public’s favourite eCommerce Website in 2011 in the eCommerce awards and has over the years ranked as the number 1 eCommerce site in country.
Lynette Hundermark, head of product strategy at Prezence Digital, says, “One of the many factors to the success of implementing a strong mCommerce strategy is providing a great mobile shopping user experience where customers expect to be able to find what they want, with the minimal amount of time and effort possible with the necessary product information being key.”
“The bidorbuy experience on a mobile phone should be thoroughly enjoyable and as good, if not better, than the web versions keeping the customer wanting to return.”
Jaco Jonker, chief executive officer of bidorbuy.co.za, says allowing bidders and buyers access to their platform no matter where they are was a key factor in the decision to make their website’s offerings mobile.
