Amy Binns trained as a photographer before spending ten years as a newspaper reporter. She teaches print and digital journalism. Her research is largely around finding practical solutions for difficult behaviour online, which involves working with a wide range of people including media industry professionals, and fellow academics.
She still loves a good story and recently researched, wrote and self-published a local history book, Valley of the Chapels, which led her to a new field in feminist history scholarship.
Amy has worked for local newspapers including the Yorkshire Post and magazines including the Times Higher Education Supplement.
Amy published an article on The Conversation in May 2017 about the effect of violent language after the leak of Facebook’s internal training manuals, entitled ‘Facebook’s moderation rules prove it’s OK with being a hostile place for women’.
Amy had a further article published on The Conversation in June 2017 about using machine-learning techniques to shed new light on election outcomes. The article is entitled ‘#weakandwobbly: how Twitter revealed the mood that led to a hung parliament.’.
In July 2017 Amy published a further article on The Conversation about the continuing abuse of journalists online, entitled ‘Online trolls mustn’t be allowed to intimidate journalists’.
