The Sunday Times held its 17th annual Top Brands Awards last night at The Maslow hotel in Sandton. Michael Bratt attended the event to find out which brands claimed glory.
The glittering gathering, which honoured brands that have excelled in their field, was very well attended with representatives from all the brands that were in the running for an award. The host for the evening was comedian Nik Rabinowitz who had the audience in stitches throughout the evening, with some jokes aimed at Eskom and Khulubuse Zuma.
But turning to the awards, the big winners in the media categories were Daily Sun, who topped the daily newspapers category; Soccer Laduma, which walked away top in the weekly newspapers category; and FCB who won the Robyn Putter Brand Agency award.
In other categories, Mercedes-Benz scooped two accolades, being named both the consumer and business top brand in the cars category. Koo was the big winner on the night walking away with awards in both the tinned foods category and with the Grand Prix Overall Favourite Brand. The Grand Prix awards were brand new (excuse the pun) this year and as well as the one Koo nabbed also included Social Investment and The Green Award. The former was won by Coca-Cola while the latter was awarded to Eskom, whose representatives received a chorus of boos from the audience when they went on stage to collect it.
Here are the winners in each category:
