Everybody has AI. Why are we all wearing the same hat?

[PRESS OFFICE] Artificial intelligence was supposed to create competitive advantage. Instead, it is increasingly creating a sea of sameness.

The same tools. The same prompts. The same outputs. The same thinking.

Across industries, organisations are rushing to adopt AI to improve productivity, automate processes and accelerate decision-making. Yet amid the excitement, a more important question is often overlooked: if your competitors can access the same technology tomorrow, what makes your business impossible to copy?

According to Sechaba Molefe from dentsu Data Labs, the assumption that AI itself is a competitive advantage has become one of the biggest misconceptions shaping business strategy today.

“The conversation has become heavily focused on access to technology,” says Molefe. “But technology alone has never been a sustainable differentiator. The organisations that outperform their competitors are the ones that combine AI with unique data, human insight, creativity and a deep understanding of the markets they serve.”

As AI tools become more widely available, the real challenge is no longer adoption. It is differentiation. When every organisation can access similar models, platforms and capabilities, competitive advantage shifts away from the technology itself and towards how it is applied.

This is particularly relevant in Africa, where businesses operate in highly diverse markets with unique customer behaviours, infrastructure realities and growth opportunities. Simply importing strategies developed elsewhere may deliver incremental gains, but it is unlikely to unlock transformative value.

Instead, African organisations have an opportunity to develop AI-enabled solutions grounded in local context, local data and local challenges.

That perspective will form the basis of Molefe’s presentation at AI Expo Africa 2026: Everybody Has AI. Why Are We All Wearing the Same Hat?

The session challenges business leaders to rethink their approach to artificial intelligence and to move beyond the belief that technology adoption alone is enough to create market advantage.

Molefe will also host an interactive workshop, Congratulations. AI Just Joined Your Team. Now What Are You Going to Do with Your Newest Employee? which explores practical ways organisations can integrate AI into teams, processes and decision-making frameworks to create measurable business impact.

Rather than focusing on hype, predictions or speculative futures, both sessions will concentrate on a more pressing question facing organisations today: how do you create differentiation when everyone has access to the same technology?

The answer, argues Molefe, lies in combining AI with the assets competitors cannot easily replicate,  proprietary data, strategic thinking, creativity, organisational culture and human judgement.

Because everybody has AI. The organisations that win will be the ones that use it differently.

Join Sechaba Molefe from dentsu Data Labs at AI Expo Africa 2026, taking place on 28-29 October 2026, for a discussion on how African organisations can move beyond AI adoption and turn artificial intelligence into sustainable business advantage.
