Women for Change and Edelman South Africa took the top honour at the 2026 Effie Awards South Africa, winning the Grand Effie for their campaign, The Unburied Casket, in the Non-Profit category.

Announced at a ceremony at The Venue, Melrose Arch, on 20 October, the awards recognised marketing effectiveness across 45 finalists, with 27 trophies presented: one Grand Effie, four Gold, 10 Silver and 12 Bronze.

The programme, hosted by the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA), also introduced two new honours. Women for Change was named Marketer of the Year, while Joe Public received Agency of the Year.

The new titles recognise consistent performance across a body of effective work and are determined by points earned by finalists and winners, using the Effie Index methodology.

Gillian Rightford, ACA executive director for Effie South Africa, said this year’s winning campaigns demonstrated the value of combining a clear understanding of a challenge with creativity and rigorous measurement.

“The work shows how effective marketing can build businesses, shift behaviour and make a meaningful contribution to society,” she said, congratulating the agency and client teams behind the winning campaigns.

New leadership for 2027

Effie South Africa also announced changes to its leadership ahead of the 2027 programme.

Refilwe Maluleke, executive head of marketing at Discovery Health, will become committee chair, succeeding Anwar Jappie, whose tenure concludes with the 2026 programme. Neo Makhele, chief strategy officer at Ogilvy South Africa, takes over as deputy chair.

Fran Luckin, co-chief creative officer at Boundless, and Mandisa Theko-Khitsane, marketing executive at Sanlam Retail Mass, will serve as jury co-chairs.

Rightford thanked Jappie for his leadership and acknowledged Maluleke and Ahmed Tilly for their work and oversight as jury co-chairs over the past three years.

She said the incoming leadership team would build on the programme’s achievements while maintaining the professionalism and rigour of the judging process.
