From the stage to the classroom

Rocking the Future with Curro, Foreshore, Cape town

[PARTNER CONTENT] What began as one woman’s search for a more meaningful audience has grown into one of South Africa’s most enduring youth-engagement organisations.

As it approaches its 26th anniversary, 3RC continues to champion its founding mission: to see the youth of South Africa educated, motivated and inspired.

A musician’s idea, a nation’s impact

3RC’s story began with founder Kay Cheytanov, whose career spanned IT support, web design, project management, and training facilitation, alongside a genuine passion for music. In 1999, Cheytanov took on IT contract work by day to fund her nights performing at festivals and clubs. By 2001, she found herself craving something different — a sober, engaged audience she could truly connect with, rather than the fleeting applause of a crowd. School children, she realised, offered exactly that.

The idea took shape during an ordinary drive, when a radio advert for The Zone Computer College sparked a simple but powerful question: what if performance and education could be one and the same? That question gave rise to 3RC.

Three words, one mission

More than 25 years on, 3RC’s work still rests on three founding principles:

Educate: Nurturing young people’s understanding of their circumstances and potential through schooling and information.

Motivate: Giving young people genuine reasons to engage with the brands, companies, and people who can improve their lives.

Inspire: Encouraging youth to dream boldly and equipping them with the tools to make those dreams real.

Through ethical, mindful marketing, 3RC has built a lasting bridge between commercial partners and a genuinely engaged youth audience, earning continued access to schools across the country year after year.

Two decades on the ground and beyond

3RC has delivered face-to-face shows in schools nationwide, with a dedicated team of facilitators and presenters reaching learners even in South Africa’s most remote corners. To date, the organisation has delivered more than 6,500 live shows to approximately 1,600,000 learners.

When COVID-19 halted in-person events, 3RC adapted swiftly. In 2021, the team launched its first virtual career expo. By 2022, it had unveiled a world-first fully 3D, VR-enabled career expo, followed in 2023 by Swiwel.com, an immersive platform offering personality and aptitude testing, supported by sponsors including Amka, Staedtler, and OXY. Swiwel welcomes not just matriculants, but anyone reconsidering their path in life.

A new chapter: Supporting young minds

In 2024, 3RC turned its attention to the mental well-being of primary school learners with the launch of High 5, a 50-minute interactive programme for grades 2–5 designed to build resilience, kindness, safety, bravery, and self-acceptance in children aged 8 to 11. The programme extends beyond the classroom through family dance challenges and well-being-themed colouring contests.

Looking ahead

As 3RC approaches its quarter-century milestone, the organisation remains driven by the same conviction that inspired its founding: that today’s learners are tomorrow’s leaders, and they deserve a team that shows up for them, again and again.
