King James has won Pendoring’s sought after Prestige Award for the second consecutive year for its Sanlam Musiekfees campaign. The Umpetha Award for the best advertisement in an indigenous language other than Afrikaans is shared between Ogilvy & Mather, Johannesburg, for its radio ad for KFC, Slyza Tsotsi 3 and The Odd Number, also for a radio ad Umsebenzi for BBC Brit. Both ads are in Zulu.
Both the Prestige Award and the Umpetha Award consist of the prize of an overseas study tour worth R100 000.

Carina Bonse and Gabi van Niekerk from Red & Yellow School of Logic and Magic in Cape Town won the Overall Student Award with their entry Die water is perfek! in the category Integrated Campaign. They will share the R10 000 for the best Afrikaans work in the student category. Their campaign was also the only student entry that took gold.

The winners were announced in front of a packed and appreciative audience at the glittering annual awards evening at Vodacom World in Midrand on Friday, 28 October. At the same time, Pendoring’s 21st birthday was celebrated in style.
The judging panel sang the praises of King James’s campaign Elke woord ’n meesterstuk for Sanlam’s music festival. “Original and innovative. It also shows an appreciation for Afrikaans music. In addition, King James succeeded in creating an interactive experience that the audience will not easily forget,” they said.

The judges were so impressed with the quality of the entries in the radio category that it came as no surprise that both Umpetha winners come from this category. But the judges were not only impressed by the indigenous language radio ads, they were also of the opinion that our indigenous languages “are flexing their muscles in general with their original touch and insight into the South African soul”.
A total of nine (9) gold and 37 silver Pendoring trophies were awarded: eight (8) gold to the professional agencies and one (1) to students and 29 silver to agencies and eight (8) silver to students.
Of the eight (8) gold Pendorings awarded to agencies, King James, Cape Town, Mullen Lowe, Cape Town and Ogilvy & Mather, Johannesburg, won two (2) each, and FCB, Johannesburg, and The Odd Number one (1) each.

In terms of silver, FCB, Johannesburg, came out on top with six (6) silver trophies, followed by Joe Public, FCB 1886 and Ogilvy & Mather, Johannesburg with three (3) each. King James, Cape Town, Promise Brand Specialists, DDB South Africa and DPK won two (2) silver awards each, while Mullen Lowe, Cape Town, FCB, Cape Town, 34°, Jupiter Drawing Room, OpenCo and Ninety9Cents Communications won one (1) each.
The silver winners in the student categories are: North-West University (1), AAA School of Advertising, Johannesburg (1); AAA School of Advertising, Cape Town (1); Vega School of Brand Leadership, Pretoria (2) and Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography (3).
