Sharon Coen

Dr. Sharon Coen is a Reader/Associate Professor in Media Psychology at the University of Salford.

She obtained her ‘Laurea’ degree in Psychology at the Universita’ degli Studi di Padova, where she worked under the supervision of Professor Anne Maass on her Master level project titled ‘Attitude measures and behaviour: Which connection? A study about religious intergroup relations’. She then went on to earn her PhD in Social Psychology at the University of Sussex, where her thesis was entitled: ‘Collective Guilt and Shame in Intergroup relations. The effects of group based guilt and shame on intergroup attitudes and prosocial behaviour’.

Dr. Coen’s research primarily focuses on media communication, journalism, and new media, and their role in shaping political and social issues. She has a keen interest in applying media psychology to promote action aimed at minimizing the impact of climate change and addressing the climate emergency.

In addition to her research, Dr. Coen leads the only MSc in Media Psychology in the UK.
