It’s a question of… Challenging men in media to grow their mo’s
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter
It’s ‘Movember’ and time for men – and women – to put their money where their mouths are. Well, men will be growing some mo’s where their mouths are but we’re hoping women will sponsor them in their efforts! Chris Hitchings, CEO of DStv Media Sales, has opted to support Movember this year, and is challenging men in media to do the same by growing their mo’s, and finding sponsors to support their efforts, all in aid of Cansa, and to drive awareness around men’s health, and prostrate and testicular cancer.
Movember has a hairy history. Started in 2003 by two friends Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, from Melbourne in Australia, it has grown into a global mo-vement with hundred of thousands mo bro’s and mo sistas , and their donors, supporting it.
Here’s the deal: Hitchings and his DStv team have decided to get behind the mo-vement, and are challenging other men in media to do the same. TheMediaOnline will support them in their efforts by providing weekly updates in our newsletters, on our Facebook page and our Pinterest board, and of course, tweeting updates on our men in media via the hashtag #TMOvember.
We’re asking you to send us pics of yourselves every Thursday to show your growth, and give us a few words on how your sponsorship drive is going. We’ll upload your mo to Pinterest and we’re hoping that board is going to fairly bristle with fine moustaches! Just put ‘mo’ in the subject line, and email me on editor@themediaonline.co.za with your mo-stories and pics.
Hitchings believes our men in media can raise R50 000. We believe with women in media sponsoring them, they can do it with ease.

What made you decide to get involved with Movember this year? Have you done it before?

This is the first time we will be involved with Movember – we realised that, although there has been high local awareness of  the movement with guys growing Mo’s in November, there was little formal fund raising taking place. Across the globe Movember raised close to R1 billion towards prostate & testicular cancer last year. This year DStv Media Sales along with SuperSport & Multichoice are getting behind Movember and are supporting the cause with a variety of initiatives.

What is your challenge to other men in media?

I’ve never grown a mo, and no doubt I’m going to look a bit silly. My wife may never forgive me! But I think it’s important to for us to donate our faces to the cause for a month and be walking, talking billboards for Movember.

Please personally challenge some chaps. Take the opportunity to throw down the gauntlet!

C’mon guys across the industry, rise up Mad Men and join the cause! Yes you Chris Botha, Ian Majewski, the Gordon’s, Kenny Varejes, Andrew Cooper, Anton Heunis. And you Grant Fraser, Quinton Jones, Richard Procter…

How much would you like media men to raise?

It’s the first time we’ve been involved so difficult to say. But surely we can raise R50k amongst us…?

Have you found any sponsors yet?

Outsurance are getting heavily involved this year.

How involved are your team at DStv Media Sales? Any other chaps growing mo’s?

Yep, the whole team have been challenged to underline their noses and there’s fierce internal competition…

Who’s moustaches do you really admire, from days of old and more modern ones?

I like the real he-men mo’s like Hulk Hogan and the dude from American Chopper on Discovery Channel. Of course, Naas Botha was an iconic mo bro, and then there were those cops from Chips (Baker & Poncherelo) –  guess I’m giving away my age here…

Will you be hosting or attending any Movember events?

I went to the official Movember launch & witnesses Jack Parrow live for the first time. It changed my life…I can’t wait for the closing ceremony…

Why are campaigns like Movember so important to you and to men around the world?

Let’s face it, men don’t really talk about their issues much do they. But cancer is a threat to all of us & we should be doing all that we can to better understand the disease & how we can eradicate it. All the women out there need to get behind their men and support this too – after all they all have husbands, sons & brothers that they need to protect…

What is your personal goal in terms of fundraising?

Like Hashim Amla (now there’s some face hair!) I don’t like to limit myself with personal targets…

But if I can raise a few thousand rand myself and be an evangelist for Movember at the same time, I’ll sleep easy at night…
