Who’s moved where

Senior staff appointment at marcusbrewster

Dayne Stern has been appointed as account manager in the Cape Town office of managed communication services firm marcusbrewster.  Heading the agency’s corporate practice area, Stern will be responsible for integrated public relations programmes for the firm’s business-to-business and technology clients.

Stern studied journalism at Rhodes and then became new business development manager at a media house before transferring into PR at a boutique consultancy.

“Dayne brings extensive experience in research, communication strategy, project management, SEO and social media to the boardroom table” says chairman Marcus Brewster. “In addition, his skill set in copywriting and editing, DTP, database management, production and websites qualify him to oversee a spread of managed communication services for our clients above and beyond simple publicity”.

Ipsos appoints Nick Coates head of marketing

Global market research company, Ipsos, has appointed Nick Coates as head of the marketing business unit of its South African operation. Coates has over 12 years of management services experience having started his career in management consulting in the United Kingdom before joining Research International UK.

Transferring to South Africa in 2004, Coates managed Research International South Africa’s ICT & Financial Services division and assumed general management of Research International South Africa’s Cape Town regional office. He holds a Masters degree in Industrial Psychology from Rhodes University.  Coates has most recently spent three years at Ipsos Russia as deputy managing director and head of the marketing business unit.

Ogilvy & Mather South Africa announce graduate programme top talent

The opportunity to kickstart a rewarding career in a cutting-edge industry is what University of Cape Town student, Mathew Browning, is most looking forward to after being selected as one of just four winners from 63 candidates in this year’s pilot Ogilvy Graduate Programme (OGP).

The initiative aims to identify and groom the finest talent among final year creative and marketing students. In February 2013, these winners will join the ranks of Ogilvy & Mather (O&M) Johannesburg and Cape Town campuses as full-time employees and in addition will be awarded a full bursary for their final year tuition. The graduate programme, which will roll out annually, complements the communication group’s extensive talent inclusion and development initiatives.

“We not only build brands; we build talent,” says O&M South Africa CEO Abey Mokgwatsane. “It’s not just our responsibility, but our obligation, to invest in the future of our industry by continually building the talent pool that will support the brands we manage today, well into the future.”

They are: Matthew Browning, Nashane Mariah, Tshepo Chaka and Michael Stopforth.

Four tertiary institutions with whom O&M has longstanding relationships were handpicked to participate in the programme, including the University of Cape Town (Business Science Marketing), the University of Johannesburg (Marketing), the University of Pretoria (Visual Communication) and Red and Yellow School of Logic and Magic (all faculties).

A bigger and better ACA under the leadership of the 2013 Board

In her report detailing the ACA’s activities during 2012, interim chairperson Nina Morris noted that she was elected as chairperson of the Board of Directors during August this year following the resignation of Wayne Naidoo.

She adds that 2012 was undoubtedly a year of challenges and that 2013 is poised to be as tough for the advertising sector. However, she assured the audience that the ACA is confident that it will continue to aid agencies in these challenges, with the support and dedication of its team at the Secretariat, and under the leadership of the new Board.

In short…

Chantelle Muteswa has been appointed and assumed the position of senior account executive at human.kind Advertising.

Who’s won what

MACHINE on a steady acquisition drive

MACHINE, the award winning integrated below the line agency, recently acquired the digital accounts for Appletiser, Citroen and Tiger Brand Beverages, as well as the full through the line accounts for ADDIS and Habitat for Humanity.

“We are extremely happy with the new business generated since our agency consolidation earlier in the year,” commented Tom Fels, deputy MD MACHINE.  ‘The trust placed in us by these leading brands reflects our own belief that we have hit the mark with a uniquely integrated set of specialist skills that are highly relevant in the marketplace. We look forward to nurturing these relationships in the year ahead.”

Liqui-Gruit to keep Absa Cape Epic riders refreshed

Liqui-Fruit will be the official juice sponsor of the 2013 Absa Cape Epic when 1200 riders take on a gruelling 800km over eight days from 17-24 March in the Western Cape.

Liqui-Fruit has simultaneously announced its title sponsorship of the Vineyard races that take place on the final day of the Absa Cape Epic at Lourensford Wine Estate. Known as the Liqui-Fruit Cape Times Vineyard races, these events are open to the public and are far less extreme. Apart from a 29km and 56 km Mountain Bike Race, there will also be a 6km and 15km trail run.

Liqui-Fruit iCan, which raises funds for Operation Smile South Africa, will be the official charity of the Liqui-Fruit Cape Times Vineyard races. Operation Smile funds corrective surgery for children born with cleft lips and cleft palates, helping to give these children their smiles back.

C.S.A. set to shimmy this summer

Shimmy Beach Club, the multi million rand development on the south arm of the harbour in Cape Town’s prestigious V&A Waterfront, has appointed Communication Services Africa, the communication strategist division of Celebrity Services Africa (C.S.A.), to manage all of the venue’s PR, communications and social media strategies.

Influenced by some of the world’s most glamorous and fabulous entertainment venues, the 2000m2 Shimmy Beach Club, along with a spectacular location, private beach and expansive outside deck, is scheduled to open in early December 2012. The club features a containership-inspired bar, illuminated champagne bar, wine cooler room, as well as a glass rim flow infinity swimming pool, lounge and main restaurant.

“Shimmy is set to be Cape Town’s greatest venue this summer and we are proud to be associated with such a high profile project,” says C.S.A’s division director of Communications, Davin Phillips. “Our communications team is hard at work to garner as much publicity as possible, pre- and post- opening.”

Alliance Media wins Range Rover billboard account

After many years of waiting, the all-new Range Rover 2013 is being launched in South Africa and Alliance Media has been chosen to erect billboards for Land Rover for this launch.

The new vehicle has been hailed as the leader of luxury in the SUV market for design, comfort and fuel consumption. The vehicle will be launched in January in South Africa and Land Rover has launched the billboard campaign internationally in order to inform the public of the availability of their new flagship model.

Alliance Media is proud to work with Land Rover, the Indian owned parent of the Range Rover brand in multiple countries.

Who’s making moves

Jacaranda FM has moved to new headquarters in Midrand

After 13 years in Centurion, Jacaranda FM has moved to their new Broadcast Headquarters in Midrand. The brand new studio facing the N1 between New Road and Olifantsfontein is custom built and has every employees’ DNA incorporated into the interior and design.

The Broadcast Headquarters boasts enhanced technologies ranging from the world’s newest digital broadcasting equipment, specialised eco-friendly air conditioning and lights, access and facilities which makes disabled access easier for both employees and visitors.

The new facility has also made space for top entertainers to perform live concerts and through a unique set of networks, the HQ will be able to host up to 200 guests and listeners to experience these concerts onsite.

“In this way, the station has every person’s DNA inside the building and this is a fairly unique way of saying that the building belongs to everybody who works here and all of our stakeholders too. The open plan design also means that all the employees share the  office space and can communicate easily with each other and still have their own space”, says General Manager, Kevin Fine.

“We have grown as a company and in order to continue to serve our audience, advertisers and staff more effectively, we needed to create a space that allowed us to do this. The new Jacaranda Broadcast HQ is definitely that space, and having travelled to more than 20 stations around the world I’ve yet to see one as sophisticated, advanced, and aesthetically pleasing as this. Jacaranda FM, together with its holding company, Kagiso Media, agreed that we needed a change that was in line with our growth and vision for the business”, said Fine.
