Die nuwe Afrikaans is nou maar nice in advertensies

It is not often you will see Afrikaans in The Media but Chris Moerdyk insists that there is a new language brewing and it is beautiful (well, he actually uses far more expressive words than that).

Seriaas mense, ek moet sê ek hou van die ‘Nuwe Afrikaans’ al is dit vol rooinek woorde. Dit maak vir nice advertensies especially op die TV wat ons nuwe Afrikaans-afficionados noem die ‘box’.

Afrikaans was altyd vir my ’n wonderlike taal al was dit die taal van die apartheid mense. As ’n mens wil vloek dan moet jy in Afrikaans vloek want dit klink sterker en meer expressive.

For example, as ’n mens “piss off you moron” in Engels sê, klink dit net cheap en nasty. Maar “fokoff, jou doos” is heelwat sterker.

Vat maar “voetsek” – nou daar’s ’n woord wat nou wêreld-beroemd is. Wanneer ’n brak jou will byt of hy te veel blaf, hoef jy net te sê, “voooessek jou bliksem” en dan hol daai hond weg soos Usain Bolt met ’n gat vol turpentine.

Natuurlik sal al daai Afrikaanse perfectionists woes wees om te sien hoe hul taal deesdae so opgefok word.

Ek worry nie. Hulle moenie worry nie. Want ons sien nou ’n wonderlike kleurvolle taal wat lekker is om te gebruik. Specially vir rooinekke en uitlanders wat Afrikaans wou leer maar nie eintlik die wil het nie.

Hulle kan maar voortgaan en as hulle nie die Afrikaanse woord ken nie, dan gooi hulle sommer ’n Engelse woord in. Of Zulu. Of Frans.

Ek onthou ’n paar jaar gelede, Barry Ronge, wat so mooi Engels praat, hy’t gesê dat ons moenie worry dat Engels nou so bietjie opgefok is nie want dis ’n lewende taal en ons moet nou van ons high horses afklim en by die 21ste century aanmeld.

Ek moet sê, die nuwe Afrikaans is heel meer acceptable as die ou Afrikaans in our Suid Afrika.

Dis altyd vir my ’n helse surprise om uit te vind dat die vast majority van Afrikaans-sprekende mense in Suid Afrika nie whites
is nie.

Natuurlik was daar altyd Afrikaans in die reklame wêreld. As ’n mens in die ou dae ’n advertensie in Engels op SAUK wou flight, moes jy ook ’n Afrikaanse weergawe instuur.

En die Afrikaanse ads moes altyd in perfect Afrikaans wees – geen anglisismes and definitely geen vloekwoorde.

Maar nou is dit different. Ek sien dat nuwe Afrikaans werk ook nou in Engelse ads en dis mos bladdy wonderlik.

Dit maak sense, die nuwe Afrikaans. Dis mos egte Suid Afrika. Dis ons. Al is ons Engels sprekend soos ek.

For example, ek het ’n paar jaar gelede na die wireless geluister in Kaapstad. Hulle het ’n discussion gehad oor die naam van Adderley Street.

Sulke mense will dit verander na iets meer Suid Afrikaans. Die Kaapse rooinekke will die naam hou. (Adderley was ’n rooinek lid van die House van Commons in London en hy het hard geveg om al die Britse criminals na Australia aan te voer en nie in die Kaap aflaai te laai nie, wat die oorspronlike idea was. Ek
reckon dat die Adderley kêrel nie ’n Suid Afrikaanse held was nie maar ’n enemy van the state. As hy nie ingemeng het nie sou ons Shane Warne in die Proteas krieketspan gehad het.)

Anyway, hierdie argument het vir ’n uur of so aangegaan en uiteindelik het ’n ware Kapenaar gebel en gesê: “Ek dink dat ons Adderley Street moet fokkin change na iets wat regtig Kaaps is – soos ‘JouMa se Straat’…”

Hoe wonderlik sou dit wees: “Joumaarse Straat”.

Elke jaar is daar die Pendoring Awards wat hulde aan Afrikaans advertensies bring.

Ek hoop dat die Pendoring mooi voortgaan en dat hulle ook pryse aan mense wat die nuwe Afrikaans in hulle advertensies gebruik sal gee.
