OFM is drawing to the close of what has to be one of the longest birthday parties ever. It started with the golf experience road show, and will end with a kick-ass party in Mauritius next month. In the meantime, TheMediaOnline asked various presenters to tell us of some of their most memorable moments on air
Pieter Moller
Q: What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced on air at OFM?
When I had to read news at 7am and the first insert and sound clip was of myself.
Q: What moment made you want to weep?
Vodacom Soul Season. Heartbreak stories and people crying after receiving much-needed funds. And presenting a little boy with a new wheelchair for the first time, after he had to crawl his way to school, etc.
Q: When did you KNOW you were experiencing the power of radio?
Welkom mines retrenchments. When we urged people to donate money and poor school kids brought R10 spending and saving money for those in need.
Q: When did you wish you could punch someone through the airwaves?
Those arrogant macho men who phone in and swear on radio.
Christie Hansen
Q: What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced on air at OFM?
Q: What moment made you want to weep?
Toe ons saam met Vodacom geld gegee het vir ‘n kind wat vir ‘n operasie moes gaan en die ma begin huil het toe ons vir haar se dat die operasie betaal is.
Q: When did you KNOW you were experiencing the power of radio?
Toe ek die Midas madness weekend die eerste keer gedoen het en gesien het hoeveel mense opdaag a.g.v die mentions op die radio
Q: When did you wish you could punch someone through the airwaves?
Toe ‘n luisteraar my aangevat het oor hoe ek ‘n woord uitgespreek het. Ek was toe net ‘n paar dae op die lug.
Lindsay Batteson
Q: What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced on air at OFM?
My funniest moment would have to be the time I had to read an English live read regarding a rugby feature on the breakfast show. Instead of reading the Afrikaans version of feature’s name, ‘Pale Toe’, I read it in English, which obviously made for a rather humorous version of the message. It was all terribly embarrassing, but I still maintain that there were no italics or “inverted commas”!
Q: What moment made you want to weep?
Karien Jordaan, a consummate member of our OFM Content Hub, created a fantastic on-air feature pertaining to Nelson Mandela’s birthday. It was done with such warmth and sensitivity, that I was a complete and utter mess by the time I had finished playing…which make speaking a little bit of a problem!
Q: When did you KNOW you were experiencing the power of radio?
My moment may seem inconsequential to some, but it meant the world to me. On a quiet Saturday afternoon, an elderly lady phoned to thank me for keeping her company on a day when she was feeling particularly lonely – that’s when I realised that what we do is so much more than just mere entertainment.
Q: When did you wish you could punch someone through the airwaves?
I once had a rather irate caller phone me to ask why I was playing music that promoted inter-racial relationships…the song he was referring to was INXS – Original Sin. After the completely pointless conversation the followed, I was ready to do a bit of grievous bodily harm via the airwaves!
Andre Kunz
Q: What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced on air at OFM?
When the mid wife we were interviewing was explaining that “breast is best” and she translated it into “die tiet is verniet”
Q: What moment made you want to weep?
During Soul Season when a man got given the money to pay for the procedure to donate his kidney to his sick brother
Q: When did you KNOW you were experiencing the power of radio?
When we set up a fake UFO sighting, and the phone lines lit up with people who had seen the same UFO that never existed
Q: When did you wish you could punch someone through the airwaves?
Have never lost my cool on air.
Marian Nyako-Lartey
Q: What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced on air at OFM?
My funniest moment I’ve experienced on air at OFM was when I felt I had a really good link only to find once I was done that my mic wasn’t on!
Q: When did you KNOW you were experiencing the power of radio?
I knew I was experiencing the power of radio and still know today every time my nerves kick in when I have to go on live.
Q: When did you wish you could punch someone through the airwaves?
I feel like punching someone through the airwaves each time I listen to the radio and callers just don’t get or understand the obvious or make any sense!
