Draftfcb walked away with 10 sought-after Pendoring trophies (five gold and five silver) this weekend. Draftfcb Cape Town and Johannesburg not only came out tops at the prestigious 17th awards ceremony of the Pendoring Advertising Awards for excellent Afrikaans and South African advertising, but Draftfcb’s Cape Town agency also won the Prestige Award for its sterling advertising for the Cape Town daily Die Burger.

Draftfcb Cape Town triumphed with gold awards in both the category Radio and Original Afrikaans category for the advertisement Kiwi-Kapenaars, for Paleis/Pandok in the newspaper category and silver for Shaik in the category Out of Home. This achievement earned the Cape Town agency Pendoring’s highest accolade – the Prestige Award.

In addition, Draftfcb Cape Town received a silver Pendoring in the category Communication Design for Klink ’n glasie (Distell), while Draftfcb (Johannesburg) received gold in the category Truly South African for the TV ad Pirates (Vodacom) and for the radio campaign Kobe Beef, Queen’s Cake and Ghee (for Lotto).

Draftfcb Johannesburg, for client Toyota, also bagged two silver Pendorings in the TV categories for Taai Verby and “FJ”, while their poster campaign titled Jack Parow for Pendoring 2010 garnered silver as well.

Advertising stalwart and veteran Hennie Klerck (80), founding partner of Adverkor – later known as Klerck, Marais & Potgieter (KMP) and Saatchi & Saatchi Klerck & Barrett – was honoured with the Legend Award for his pioneering role in promoting Afrikaans advertising over three decades, making him only the third recipient of this award.

Following in the wake, Joe Public was awarded two gold Pendorings (for its Clover-kalendar in the category Communication Design and the newly introduced craft category), while Ogilvy Johannesburg garnered one gold (in the category Email and Viral Marketing) for Fokofpolisiekar (Audi) and three silver Pendorings, two for the campaign Triomf, Toorberg, Fiela se kind (for Exclusive Books) in the category Newspaper and Original Afrikaans and for Phela (for Topsy Foundation) in the category Truly South African: Radio.

Etiket, MetropolitanRepublic, Lowe Bull Cape Town, DDB South Africa and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg, each bagged one gold and one silver Pendoring.

Etiket received gold for the opening video at the Pendoring gala event in 2010 and silver for Thomas@rock-ster.net (for LAPA), MetropolitanRepublic earned gold for the FNB ad Anthem and silver for The End (for Vuzu), both in the category Truly South African (TV), DDB South Africa walked away with a gold craft Pendoring and silver in the magazine category for the campaign Malvalekkertert en Suurmelk/’n Bietjie helium vir my opblaaspop asseblief (for Honda) and TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg garnered gold for its campaign Wattled Crane/Blue Swallow/Riverine Rabbit/Wild Dog in the category Truly South African: General (for Endangered Wildlife Trust), and silver for the radio campaign Zulu/Setswana/Xhosa in the category Truly South African.

A gold and silver in the category Truly South African: General went to Lowe Bull Cape Town for Your Hair and Nails can Save the Rhino (for Stop Rhino Poaching), and Clifford (for Independent Newspapers).

Baie-Lingual Blink Stefanus walked away with two silver Pendoring trophies – in the category Original Afrikaans for the campaign Hoër/ Kont-inent/Poësie and in the category Email and Viral Marketing for Quintin (for Blink Stefanus), while Net#work BBDO Johannesburg received a gold Pendoring trophy in the category Out of Home for the Exclusive Books campaign Dalene/Ingrid. TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Cape Town received a silver Pendoring for the radio campaign, Lullaby: Siembamba, Mamma se Aksieheld/Slaap Drama Slaap Soet (for Cinema Nouveau).

In the student category, two gold and five silver Pendorings were awarded.

Emma Robinson-Harbour and Leighton Coertze (graphic design) and Georgia Walsh (multimedia) from the University of Johannesburg were crowned overall student winners for their stunning graphic novel, Pan se Verlore Skaduwee, in the digital media category.

Lubabalo Mtati from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth also received gold for the campaign Eyam, Inkomo Zobuhlobo, Kultured, Pipe Dreams, Ugubani Wena? in the category Truly South African.

Vega, the school of Brand Innovation Bordeaux garnered two silver Pendorings, while North-West University (Potchefstroom campus), AAA School of Advertising Johannesburg and the Red and Yellow School of Logic and Magic each received one silver Pendoring.

“It appears that South Africans are generally trying hard to work towards a better future and this resonates in the advertising industry. It was quite noticeable how pressing social issues and topics are embraced and highlighted in advertising, as though to challenge the nation to think about what will happen in and to the country going forward,” commented Jan Teulingkx, overseas Pendoring judge from Saatchi & Saatchi in Brussels and chairman of the judging panel.

“Overall, South African advertising is very sharp, manifesting excellent insight and clever thoughts. The top of the Pendoring crop, the Prestige winner, is intelligent and quite brilliant.”

Besides witnessing the crowning of some of the sharpest advertising minds in the business, guests were treated to a nostalgic trip down memory lane showcasing favourite Afrikaans advertisements over the years, pulsating entertainment by the hottest Afrikaans performers, food fit for a king and an entertaining cameo of the 2010 Prestige winners jolling and rolling in New York.
