The next African unicorn may not be a startup. It may be a brand

[PRESS OFFICE] Africa has never had a shortage of ideas. It has never lacked creativity or talent. What it has lacked is ownership.

As global marketers move beyond the hype surrounding AI and emerging technologies and focus instead on measurable business impact, there is an important lesson for Africa. The real opportunity is not to adopt every new tool faster than everyone else. The opportunity is to build and own the things that create long term value.

The latest global CMO research from dentsu found a growing shift away from experimentation for its own sake. Marketing leaders are increasingly demanding innovation that solves business problems and creates meaningful differentiation that delivers measurable outcomes.

For Africa, that conversation should go further.

The question is not whether we can participate in the future. The question is whether we can own part of it.

Continent of potential

Africa has been described as a continent of potential. Potential consumers. Potential growth. Potential innovation. Yet potential is not economic value. Potential does not create jobs. Potential does not create intellectual property. Potential does not create businesses that scale globally. Ownership does.

As Dawn Rowlands, CEO of dentsu Africa, recently noted; “We cannot spend another decade exporting talent while importing innovation. Consuming platforms we do not own. Creating value that accrues elsewhere. The opportunity before us is bigger than growth. It is ownership. Ownership of ideas. Ownership of technology. Ownership of intellectual property. Ownership of our future.”

That challenge extends beyond government and technology startups. It applies equally to brands.

Brands have seen themselves primarily as advertisers. The next generation of successful African brands will need to think differently. They will need to think like platform builders.

Shaping global culture

Across the continent we are already seeing Africa shape global culture through music, entertainment, sport, fashion, and creator communities. African creativity is no longer emerging. It is influencing culture around the world.

The challenge now is ensuring that the commercial value created by that influence remains closer to home.

Who owns the audience? Who owns the platform? Who owns the customer relationship? Who owns the intellectual property?

Those questions will increasingly determine which organisations create lasting value.

At dentsu Africa, this is already shaping how we invest and innovate.

Insight to action

We are building proprietary capabilities that help clients move from insight to action faster. Through Mercury, our data and audience intelligence stack, COPO (Consumer in Your Pocket) and the dentsu Cultural Index, we help brands understand consumers, culture, and behaviour through an African lens.

Through platforms such as CURATOR and DISRUPTOR, we are creating tools that help clients navigate increasingly complex market environments.

Through dentsu Studios, we can take an idea, bring it to life visually within hours and rapidly test it with consumers through COPO, significantly reducing the distance between concept and validation, and through the dentsu School of Influence, we continue to invest in the creators, talent and communities that will shape the future of the industry.

Building intellilgence

This is not about building technology for the sake of technology. It is about building intelligence, capability and intellectual property that solves real African challenges, and why one of the most important opportunities for African brands over the next decade may not lie in launching better campaigns. It may lie in building better businesses.

The next African unicorn may not be a tech startup. It may be a brand that owns a community. A brand that creates a platform. A brand that develops valuable intellectual property. A brand that understands its audience better than anyone else. A brand that turns culture into commercial value.

The future will not belong to those who consume the most innovation. It will belong to those who build, commercialise, and own it.

Africa’s opportunity is no longer potential. It is ownership.
