Access is no longer the advantage

[PRESS OFFICE] The Signals Shaping Business, Media, Technology and Consumer Behaviour Across Africa.

Adopt the technology. Build the audience. Enter the market. Partner with the creator and move faster than everyone else. That worked when access was scarce. Today, access is everywhere.

Most organisations can deploy AI. Most brands can buy reach. Most businesses can enter new channels. Most competitors have access to the same tools.

The advantage has moved. What matters now is not who has access. It is who creates value from it.

Three signals suggest that shift is already underway.

The people selling ad space are no longer media wwners

What everybody is talking about

Retail media. New advertising inventory. More places to reach consumers.

What everybody is missing

This is not a media story. It is a control story. Media owners know what people consume. Retailers know what people buy.

One of those signals has become significantly more valuable.

Across Africa, retailers are investing heavily in loyalty ecosystems, commerce platforms, and first-party customer data. In South Africa, players such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay and Takealot are continuing to expand retail media capabilities built on direct customer relationships. The value is not the advertising inventory. The value is knowing what happens at the point of purchase.

Where we disagree

Retail media is often described as the next growth channel. That is too small a view. What we are seeing is a shift in influence from those who measure attention, to those who measure action.

Why this matters

Marketing budgets have always followed accountability. The closer a platform gets to a transaction, the easier it becomes to prove impact.

That matters because every marketing budget is under pressure to demonstrate value.

Ask yourself:  If purchase data becomes the most valuable asset in marketing, who really owns the customer relationship?

AI doesn’t have a technology problem

New models. Smarter tools. Faster outputs. Lower costs.

What everybody is missing

Most organisations are still asking: “What can AI do?” The more important question is: “Who takes responsibility when it gets something wrong?”

The African Union Continental AI Strategy places strong emphasis on governance, accountability, and responsible AI deployment. The conversation is already moving beyond capability towards trust, transparency, and oversight.

The technology is advancing rapidly. Confidence is not.

 Where we disagree

There are still businesses that see AI as a technology race. We think it is becoming a credibility race. Because nobody remembers the AI that worked. They remember the AI that failed.

Why this matters

Access to AI is quickly becoming commonplace.

Trust is not. One can be purchased, the other must be earned.

The question to ask: If customers do not trust the output, does the technology matter?

Africa has never had a demand problem

Population growth. Consumer opportunity. Digital adoption. Market expansion.

What everybody is missing

Africa has never lacked demand. It has often lacked connectivity.

The continent’s most important growth stories are increasingly infrastructure stories.

Take the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS). The network continues to expand across African markets, enabling cross-border payments in local currencies and reducing the traditional frictions that have slowed regional trade.

That may sound like a banking story. It is not. It is a growth story. Because growth accelerates when barriers disappear.

Our point of difference

Too many businesses still approach Africa one market at a time. One strategy. One country. One expansion plan. The opportunity is increasingly regional.

Why this matters

The next generation of African winners may not be the organisations that dominate individual markets. They may be the organisations that connect multiple markets more effectively than everyone else.

The question leaders should be asking

Are we building an African business, or a collection of country businesses?

Dentsu Pulse Point

Retailers are moving closer to marketing budgets, and AI is moving closer to boardroom accountability, and Infrastructure is moving closer to growth.

The common thread is simple.

Power is changing hands

Not because of scale. Not because of technology. Not because of hype. Because organisations are being forced to prove value. For years, being early was enough, today being effective matters more.

Access is no longer the advantage. Results are.

The organisations that pull ahead over the next 2 years will not necessarily be those doing the most. They will be the organisations that can demonstrate, with confidence, that what they are doing creates value.

See the signal. Challenge assumptions. Act with confidence.

Dentsu Africa helps organisations understand what is changing across the continent, what it means for growth, and what actions matter next.
