Marie Claire editor Kate Wilson said the Sowetan used the photograph of poet Ntsiki Mazwai, the daughter of publisher Thami Mazwai, without permission.
It appeared alongside a story with the lead: “Red-blooded men are drooling over the nude photograph of Ntsiki Mazwai published in the March issue of Marie Clarie magazine.”
Wilson said she demanded an apology from the Sowetan after the story appeared in the newspaper on Friday (22 February).
In the picture published in !_LT_EMSowetan!_LT_/EM, a black strip covered Mazwai’s pelvic area. In !_LT_EMMarie Claire!_LT_/EM she appeared in the nude.
!_LT_EMSowetan !_LT_/EMpublisher Bongani Keswa denied that Mazwai was seeking legal redress, saying the situation had been “amicably resolved” with Marie Claire. Wilson said on Thursday morning (28 February) Sowetan was yet to publish the promised apology.
Mazwai’s sister, Thandiswa, was originally also set to participate in Marie Claire’s rape awareness campaign by joining other local celebrities posing in the nude, but she withdrew at the last moment.
Ntsiki Mazwai’s lawyer did not respond to enquiries by the time of publication of this report.
