According to the South African Advertising Research Foundation’s (SAARF) Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS) August 2008 release, the number of people who listen to the radio has increased by 2.6 percent.
A year ago, the “Total Radio” figure stood at 28,270-million (91.5% of the population), and that figure has increased to 29,276-million (94.1% of the population).
However, the declining trend in Time Spent Listening (TSL) has continued. In August 2007, an average South African spent 30 hours and 42 minutes listening to the radio. That figure has decreased to 30 hours and four minutes.
On a provincial level, TSL increased in Gauteng, Northern Cape, North West and Mpumalanga, but decreased for KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Eastern Cape and Free State.R
The average number of radio stations people listen to is 2.1 a week.
