The Bookmarks: all the winners

The bar has been well and truly raised in terms of awarding excellence in the digital media space. Last night’s Bookmarks awards,  run by the Digital Media and Marketing Association and held at Pigalle in Cape Town, honoured campaigns and players in the digital media and marketing world, with judges handing down more silvers and bronzes than the sought-after announced golds, indicating that to score gold, you had to be truly superb.

“The success of this evening’s event and the calibre of the 2011 entries and winners is a clear indication that the digital industry is growing from strength to strength,” said Nikki Cockcroft, chairperson of the DMMA and The Bookmarks.

Quirk Agency were the big winners, taking Best in Show and Best Agency. 24.com won Best Publishing House (Food24, News24 and Health 24 won silver in the website, mobisite and microsite category. Channel 24 won a bronze while m.news. 24.com was a winner in the mobile category, and the News24 phone app won too.)

Best agency: Quirk

Best individual contribution to South African Digital Media & Marketing went to Jason Xenopoulos. Best creative director was won by Simon Spreckley of Helol Computer. Best media planner was won by Andre Britz for Quirk, and Mel Attree got Best Social Media Marketer. Sarah Manners of Quirk won the award for Best Copywriter / Content writer.

The Daily Maverick and ZANews news took silver in the Editorial: media – news, magazines, radio and tv stations/networks category.  Bronze winners were Sarie.com, Mail & Guardian, Studio 83, the TASTE website and SowetanLIve. In Category: Best Digital Editorial Individual, Stephen Grootes of the Daily Maverick won the award.

Ogilvy Cape Town were big winners in the Category: Integrated Digital Marketing/Campaigns, taking two golds: one for the SAB Carling Black Label Be the Coach’ campaign, and the other for its VW Polo GTI Date Drive campaign. Ogilvy Interactive won gold for display advertising for its Golf R display advertising campaign.

The 2011 categories were, for the first time, not divided into those relevant to publishers and agencies. Instead the 52 categories were broken down into clusters that were open to all.  The reasoning behind the enhanced category system was to extend the awards to a wider range of digital publisher, agencies and brands and to ensure that submissions were evaluated by judges with relevant experience and expertise.

“Our restructuring of the category system definitely worked in terms of the number, calibre and variety of entries.  We are looking forward to having even more new entrants next year,” says Cockcraft.

The 2011 Bookmarks were powered by FNB.  FNB’s provincial chairman of the Western Cape, Stephen Claassen, said FNB “celebrates innovation and we support the digital industry because we love the innovation coming out of it”.

The winners were chosen from over 450 entries and were judged by top industry professionals.

The 2011 winners are:
