Media Moves… TheMediaOnline’s weekly round up. Syreeta van Rooyen joins Tribeca PR. Tribeca farms new business with GWK. Mark1 Labs the only African business shortlisted for Global MMA SMARTIES Award. Red Carpet Concepts signs two new beauty and skin care clients. Mimecast to sponsor 702’s Technobyte! Vega South Africa fields 15 semi-finalists in the global 2016 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. Atmosphere searching for top talent.

Who’s moved where

Syreeta van Rooyen joins Tribeca PR

Tribeca Public Relations has appointed Syreeta van Rooyen as an account manager, working on the agency’s Internet Solutions, HCV, Qualcomm and Next Biosciences accounts.

Van Rooyen joins Tribeca from a technology-focused PR agency where she worked on both business-to-business and consumer accounts doing internal and external communications, event management and content development.

She enjoys public relations because it enables creative freedom, relationship-building and professional growth, and the opportunity to be engaging storytellers all at the same time.

“Syreeta has a passion for public relations that matches Tribeca’s nature and ethos,” says Nicky James, co-owner of Tribeca. “Her appointment adds depth to our ability to provide valuable PR services to our clients and to create a consultancy platform for further new business growth.”

Who’s won what

Tribeca farms new business with GWK

GWK, a South African agribusiness, has appointed Tribeca Public Relations (Tribeca) as its PR agency partner. The agency is tasked with supporting GWK as it entrenches its business as a leading innovator and partner to farmers in one of the most challenging and intriguing sectors of the South African economy.

The appointment follows Tribeca’s role in co-ordinating communications around GWK’s rebranding and repositioning at the end of 2015, including the announcement of its 2015 financial results, and the launch of GWK’s ground-breaking stop-frame animation advertisement. Tribeca also assisted in telling the story about the launch of GWK Farm Foods, a subsidiary of GWK responsible for the Nature’s Farms range of consumer food products currently available nationally in Pick n Pay.

“What really attracted me to Tribeca was the company’s vision, more specifically its commitment to supporting its clients’ business objectives.  What I can say, from my experience, is that everyone at Tribeca works according to those commitments and beyond. I look forward to building the partnership further with the team,” says Neil de Klerk, GWK executive marketing manager.

Red Carpet Concepts signs two new beauty and skin care clients

Cape Town based boutique communications agency, Red Carpet Concepts (RCC), servicing high-end hospitality and luxury lifestyle brands, brings on two new beauty and skincare clients, Cape Town Beauty Bar and Dermalogica Concept Stores.

Red Carpet Concepts will be handling all PR, marketing, social media and events for the metropolitan beauty hub, Cape Town Beauty Bar.  They will also facilitate the launch event. Situated on the bustling Buitengracht Street, amidst trendy art galleries and coffee shops, the Cape Town Beauty Bar aim is to turn getting ready into a fun, atmospheric experience that can be shared among friends.

Red Carpet Concepts will also be hosting monthly themed events for the Dermalogica Concept Stores, geared towards educating the public on skincare in a variety of innovative, interactive ways, starting with the three Cape Town based concept stores in 2016, and reaching out to the rest of the branches in early 2017.

Mimecast to sponsor 702’s Technobyte!

Email security company Mimecast has announced it will sponsor popular Talk Radio 702 radio show, Technobyte! The sponsorship comes after months of collaboration between the two brands.

Brandon Bekker, MD at Mimecast South Africa, says that partnering with such a prominent radio station is indicative of Mimecast’s growth and the relevance of spreading the message of cyber-security to a wider audience. “Mimecast sponsoring Technobyte makes a lot of sense,” he says.

“We are seeing that cybercrime impacts individuals and businesses alike and the consequences of a data breach can be detrimental to both. By partnering with Primedia in this venture, we’re reaching business owners and decision makers who need to be more aware of the value of protecting the important, and often highly sensitive, information stored in emails.”

Vega South Africa fields 15 semi-finalists in the global 2016 Adobe Design Achievement Awards

Fifteen students from South Africa’s Vega School of Design, Brand and Business have been shortlisted for the prestigious global Adobe Design Achievement Awards 2016.

The Adobe Awards is one of the top design competitions on the planet: highly coveted, fiercely contested and universally regarded as one of the best platforms to launch the careers of talented young designers.

The students, who are enrolled at the Independent Institute of Education’s Vega campuses across the country, have made the shortlist from a field of thousands of global entries representing the world’s premier higher education art and design institutions. They have shown, again, that South African creative genius (and quest for excellence) more than hold their own globally.

The shortlisted students are: Stacy Barlow, Ali Bester, Jenna Emilie Busse, Peyton Butler, Ryan Goutier, Keegan Harbour, Lincoln Inc, Meera Karsan, Kirsten Lee, Zainab Mitha, Mario Nobrega, Saskia Sevenster, Connor Smith, James Strauss and Bianka Wessels.

Who’s making moves

Atmosphere searching for top talent

South African communications agency, Atmosphere Communications, part of the King James Group, will be hosting auditions for talented students to enter its annual #Launchpad 2017 internship programme. Entering its fourth year, #Launchpad 2017 kicks off in October with events in Johannesburg and Cape Town where young graduates pitch their talents to agency staff in the hope of securing one of the four positions available in 2017.

Nicola Nel, MD of Atmosphere Communications, explains that the agency aims to attract recruits who are focused on learning and who have heaps of curiosity. “We hire for attitude and train for skills, but good grades and proactivity gets your foot in the door. It is an exciting time to be in our industry, and we are committed to give our interns one of the best learning experiences around. Interesting clients, diverse projects and a creative working environment – the ideal launchpad for a future career in the communications/marketing /media environment. Successful applicants embark on a 12-month internship programme with the possibility of permanent employment. “

Atmosphere is an agency that focuses on equipping its staff to be the best in the industry and the same applies to interns who qualify for the annual programme. Interns experience real-world situations from pitching to presenting, with ongoing peer feedback and a focus on leadership and teamwork.

Atmosphere has a blue chip client base and these include the likes of Capitec Bank, Cotton On, Windhoek Beer, Sanlam, Unilever, MWEB, Avios, Nampak, Boschendal Wines, Santam, Pearsons and the Commercial Bank of Mauritius.

Applications close on 30 September 2016 and applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Send short error-free CV (no longer than two pages)
  • Submit a 200 word written motivation or a 1-minute video on why they want to work at Atmosphere or alternatively post the video on Facebook and tag the Atmosphere #Launchpad page.
  • Supply a copy of their matric results and latest varsity/college results
  • Hold a degree/diploma (need to be newly graduated) or be studying part-time for final year towards a degree/diploma or graduating this year
  • Johannesburg applications to be sent to launchpadjhb@atmosphere.co.za and Cape Town applications to launchpadcpt@atmosphere.co.za.

Candidates will be notified by 07 October 2016 of whether they have been selected for the full-day workshop on 21 October 2016. The new interns will be selected before end November 2016.

Mark1 Labs the only African business shortlisted for Global MMA SMARTIES Award

Mark1’s design division is the only African organisation shortlisted for the Global MMA SMARTIES award this year. The local awards took place during Loeries Creative Week in Durban and was a sterling testament to the exciting mobile media landscape in South Africa. The MMA SMARTIES awards are the only global awards that are specifically focused on mobile marketing and takes place on the 26th of September in New York.

“The Opel Adam (GM) campaign is one that we’re particularly proud of. We used rich media in a way that surpassed global benchmarks. All while keeping our local audience front of mind. We didn’t want data costs to get in the way of people being able to use the rich media ad unit so we made sure it was under 100kb but with full functionality,” says Brendan Sterley, creative director of Mark1 Labs.
