This proportion is higher than the average across 23 sectors.
The survey, in which 19,249 respondents participated, found on average almost a third (30%) of respondents across sectors said they felt “stressed and out of control” on a normal working day. Fifteen percent felt bored and 55% balanced and in control.
The corresponding figures for the Advertising/Marketing/Media/PR sector are: 29% said they were stressed, 13% bored and 58% balanced and in control.
The Administration/Support sector – the sector with the lowest average salary – had the highest percentage of stressed workers (39%). The Import/Export sector had the lowest (26%).
The Administration/Support and Government sector (21% in each case) scored the highest on the boredom question. The smallest percentage of workers (9%) were bored in the Arts/Textiles sector – the sector with the second lowest average salary.
According to Careers24.com the hope is that the survey, to be conducted annually, will become “the benchmark for salary levels”.
The results cannot be generalised. According to a summary of the results, they are, however, “useful for comparative purposes”.
Respondents would typically be technologically competent urban top income earners in the groups LSM7 to 10.
The average monthly salary in the Advertising/Marketing/Media/Public Relations sector ranked among the lowest six out of 23 sectors in the survey.
The average salary (monthly income before tax and other deductions) across all sectors is R18,096. The average is the highest in Gauteng (R19,749), while the Free State lags behind other provinces with an average of R13,866.
The average salary for the Advertising/Marketing/Media/PR sector is R14,818.

The mining sector is on top of the list, with an average monthly salary of R30,867.
