Real Time Wine wins Samsung Ignite title
Real Time Wine has been named as the winner of Samsung Ignite, an initiative that forms part of the 2011 Tech4Africa conference, which recognises start-ups that have developed revolutionary technological innovations that hold the potential to make a serious impact in the market.
Real Time Wine was chosen at the close of the first day of this year’s Tech4Africa conference in Bryanston, Johannesburg following presentations by eight shortlisted companies to a judging panel and conference delegates. The initiative, made possible through a partnership between Samsung Apps and Tech4Africa, was introduced this year to showcase and foster local technology development and mirrors the conference goal of promoting and inspiring the local industry.
“The Samsung Ignite platform aims to give start-ups great exposure and we were certainly very happy with the ideas and creativity that came out of this year’s platform,” says Paulo Ferreira, Head of Mobile Product and Business Solutions at Samsung. “A very big congratulations to our winner Real Time Wine who certainly demonstrated the true South African entrepreneurship flair.”
Real Time Wine won the judges’ approval for its idea of offering a mobile platform aimed at the supermarket wine-buying audience that enables them to discover, review, engage with and buy wine using smartphone apps, game mechanics and barcode scanning
Oupa Matlaila wins Peroni prize to Monza
Premium beer brand, Peroni brought its latest campaign Revved up in Style to a memorable close as the winner of the competition was announced at a glittering event held at Cultural Village in Soweto. Oupa Matlaila was randomly selected out of a potential 102 contestants as the winner of an all expenses paid trip to Monza next year.
In true Peroni style, the prize will enable Matlaila to ‘fast track his style’ starting with a pit stop at Ferrari World Theme Park in Abu Dhabi then off to Milan, a true style capital ending with the races at ‘Pista Magica’ in Italy, Monza – one of the quickest circuits in the world.
Matlaila who hails from Hammanskraal near Pretoria is a stock controller at Oliver Tambo International Airport. Ironically, he has never been on a plane before but works around airplanes all day. “I still cannot believe that my favourite beer brand picked me to go and enjoy myself overseas,” exclaimed an excited Matlaila. “I’ve always told people that I would get on a plane one day and now Peroni has made my dream come true.”
That Show spiced up by Barcelos!
Hosted by semi-controversial radio personality, stand-up comedian, columnist and TV talk show host, Rian van Heerden, there’s one thing that That Show is NOT: chicken.
As from November 1, however, you’ll find that that’s exactly what the show is sponsored by: Barcelos – spanning 93 outlets across 7 countries in delivering the finest quality chicken, marinated for 24 hours and flame grilled to perfection!
With That Show hitting the airwaves every weeknight between 7:30 and 10pm, Barcelos will draw benefit from a prime time audience – glued to their radios exactly at the time when good food cravings are at their prime.
In addition, Jacaranda 94.2’s Office Busters, which happen across the Jacaranda 94.2 Workzone and surprise offices all over the Jacaranda footprint with an early lunch on the house, will also now be sponsored by Barcelos.
iAfrica.com gets fresh for spring
One of South Africa’s largest portals, iafrica.com, has refreshed its offering of its own just in time for Spring. The portal, which is part of Primedia Online, is a South African institution and has been in existence for over 10 years, also boasting a very strong international readership.
“Web design has moved on dramatically in the three years since our current design was launched, so we wanted to bring our website up to date,” explained 365 Digital CEO, Tanja Lategan. “The changes are not intended to represent a radical overhaul but more a subtle design facelift and internal optimisation upgrades, with the aim of improving our service and making it more appealing to both readers and advertisers,”
“After analysing the website’s user behaviour as well as our advertising client’s needs we have decided to either optimise or remove specific content sections to reflect how both our readers and advertisers use the site.” Areas such as Business now has expanded inventory by incorporating previously separate, but relevant sections such as Property and Personal Finance. “This means a better offering for our advertisers and an improved user experience for our readers.”
