Art auction at MOST supports Phakama – and who knows this woman?

Twelve paintings of iconic, comic sheep by the talented artist Steve Limbrick were auctioned at the MOST Awards ceremony last week in support of the Phakama Women’s Academy. The young women from Phakama got up on to stage to hold up the paintings on auction. Phakama is a CSI programme by the VWV Group aimed at developing vital on-the-job skills to empower young women entering the marketing sector workplace.

“Phakama is a worthwhile initiative, much needed in our industry, and we were glad to be able support it through this auction. I would like to thank Steve for his masterful sheep paintings and the all organisations that bought paintings. A special thanks to Barry Sayer, Executive Chairman of Continental Outdoor Media, who put in the highest bid for a multi-colour beaded sheep, donated to the Phakama auction by Alphabet Soup,” says Sandra Gordon, CEO of Wag the Dog Publishers.

The sheep paintings were purchased by:

  1. Continental Outdoor Media
  2. The MediaShop
  3. Media Connection
  4. Primedia Broadcasting
  5. Initiative Media
  6. Provantage
  7. DStv Media Sales
  8. SABC
  9. MMAP
  10. Alphabet Soup
  11. A mystery buyer who we have as of yet been unable to identify (blonde in the middle)
  12. One sheep painting is still up for grabs.

If you know who the mystery lady in the picture with the sheep painting is, or if you would like to purchase the sheep painting in the other picture, contact Crystal Kluck, crystal@stonesoup.co.za .

Phakama means ‘to rise’ in the Zulu, Xhosa and Nguni languages. Koo Govender, CEO of the VWV Group, says empowering through knowledge is at the heart of this industry-first programme.

“Through this initiative we hope to create a leadership academy to fast-track much needed workplace skills for soon-to-be graduates in our sector, particularly among women. We are very excited to have secured the participation of three tertiary institutions, which include the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the AAA School of Advertising, and the Vega School of Brand Leadership,” says Govender.

A total of 26 second-year, third-year and honours students across all three institutions have been handpicked for the course. The content of the 2014 pilot programme will include modules that address areas such as presentation skills, developing your personal brand, CV development, interviewing skills, stress and time management, and personal finance. Each module is intended to help develop skills and confidence in the young women.

Do you know this woman? The blonde in the  middle. Help!
