Aaisha Dadi Patel

I am a South African journalist, writer, and lecturer. With a Master's in Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, I have over six years of experience across the media industry, including in journalism and university lecturing.

In my writing, I have covered issues across a broad spectrum of topics including politics, business, gender, and human interest. I have had bylines in South African as well as international publications, including The Wall Street Journal and Al Jazeera, and have been widely quoted in international publications including The Guardian, Teen Vogue, and Deutsche Welle. My research focus and area of specialty is around gender in Islam, and the representation of Muslim women.

I have been recognised for both my academic and professional endeavours. I was selected as the South African representative in the British Council’s 2017 Future News Worldwide initiative, as well as awarded the 2019 Stuart Hall Prize for Excellence in Postgraduate Research, which is given to the researcher with the top MA in media studies at the University of the Witwatersrand.
