CYBERTORIAL: The SABC has lined up some seriously hot new shows to celebrate the holiday season. Gospel music; an alternative kind of cooking show; a reality show around attending an arts school; a wildly funny comedy about single men, and their divorce lawyer and a New Year special on Generations. All served up on the SABC’s festive season menu.
CROWN GOSPEL MUSIC AWARDS (SABC1)
Welcome to the 2012 SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, a World Gospel PowerHouse Production. This year we celebrate our fifth year of going strong. The show takes a look at how we run this event, past winners, our history and shows snippets from our past events.
NO KITCHEN REQUIRED (SABC3)
No Kitchen Required is an interesting twist on the typical cooking competition show. Three chefs are dropped in remote locales and must acquire and prepare indigenous ingredients just like the locals do, while adding their own point of view to the meals. The chefs learn about the local culture and then hunt, fish, and forage for the ingredients they need to prepare their meals.
While it is a competition, there is also a strong sense of camaraderie between the chefs and a desire to honour the native people and their traditions. There is no money involved; instead the local dignitaries who also serve as judges honour the winning chef.
LIFE’S A STAGE (SABC1)
Life’s A Stage is an innovative entertainment/reality show starring young and hungry performers who attend a school of arts while they pursue their dreams of being on stage. One of the main characters in the show is Princess Zinzi Mlongo, winner of the Standard bank Young Artist Award for Theatre 2012. Princess has the honour of competing in the world’s most glamorous theatre festival in Salzburg, Austria and will be up against the best young directors from Austria, France and Korea. The competition carries a €10 000.00 euro prize and entry to the top league of theatre directors.
The show captures the world of these young artists, and documents their struggles as they endeavour to create careers in South Africa’s theatre world. It starts by establishing showcasing the drama school and revealing where the characters live and how they negotiate their terrain.
THE EXES (SABC3)
An all new comedy about three divorced men sharing an apartment across the hall from their female divorce attorney, who is also their landlord. The ‘never been married’ Holly (Johnston) introduces her newest single client, Stuart (Basche) to his new roommates: ladies’ man Phil (Faison) and the sardonic homebody, Haskell (Knight). Things get off to a shaky start for Phil and Haskell when they begin to have reservations about living with clingy Stuart, but Holly is right across the hall to help them steer clear of any catastrophes.
After all, it helps her to avoid her own relationship and commitment issues! To top it all off, Holly’s hard-partying assistant Eden (Stables), doesn’t let her professionalism get in the way of prying into her boss’s personal life. Through the episodes, the guys begin to realise that the issues they have with each other are the same ones that they had with their ex-wives.
