Times Media has announced that Stephen Haw, currently the editor of the Sunday Times Express edition, has been appointed editor of The Times, replacing Phylicia Oppelt, who takes over editorship of the Sunday Times next month.
“Haw has been a consistent asset to Times Media, and with his editorial eye and key sense for innovation, we are very confident that he will continue to strengthen The Times as a daily news leader in South Africa,” said Mike Robertson, managing director of Times Media.
Under Haw’s leadership, the Express edition has grown overall sales of the Sunday Times by more than 30% in the areas in which it is available.
Prior to his role as editor of the Express edition, Haw was the editorial product development director for Times Media. In this capacity he led the team which conceived and designed The Times. Haw was also the founding editor of the Sunday Times Lifestyle section, which won several industry awards under his stewardship.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to build on the success that has been achieved by my predecessors at The Times, Ray Hartley and Phylicia Oppelt. I feel very privileged to be building on their legacy,” Haw said.
Dominic Mahlangu, deputy editor of The Times, will serve as acting editor until May.
